Thread: Will server IP address identify site as a duplicate?

Will server IP address identify site as a duplicate?

I am in the process of setting up a site registeroffices.co.uk which will contain a smallportion of the data which is on my main site weddingpages.co.uk

If these were both on the same server with same ip address would they be identified mistakenly as duplicate sites, or am i better off hosting the additional site on a different server/ ip address

I am on a shared server with presumably dozens of other sites on it, i wonder though if the se's can make a correllation between ip address and content that is on it.

If the content is the same, it doesn't matter where you host the sites or who owns the sites. Duplicate pages are duplicate pages.

I wouldn't duplicate content anywhere, even if it's on the same IP address. Rather, I would keep one copy and then link to it from the other domain.

It is just some of the data, addresses of register offices that will be used, i am aiming to promote the register offices site as a separate entity.

Would you suggest using the data directly from the other site to return the search results or as it's data only would i be ok keeping the sites as separate entities without fear of penalty?

After all ther must be thousands of sites out there with similar data on them, ie directories,football/racing results etc so how can they penalise differentiate between duplicates of data unless they are on same ip?

The reason I was considering a separate ip address for the other site is so that it won't be penalised as a duplicate site as it isn't, it just uses a proportion of the data that is on the other site.

Will having another domain assigned to the same host server without a 301 redirect classify it as a separate site altogether in the eyes of the search engines if it looks different, aside from some aspects of the data?

Also if the structure of the site was very similar, but with a different design/look altogether, would the s.e's see them as duplicate sites?

Just present it in a slightly different manner.

What do you mean by in a 'slightly' different manner?

The data presented or the style /structure of the second site??

Further to the above information, i am intending on having separate pages on the registeroffices site with details of each register office in the country,i plan on having a link on each of these pages to the weddingpages site,to attract visitors from each city that the register offices are located.
What will the effect be on the search engine ranking if i have hundreds of links heading back to my main site? will it classify it as one link coming from the registeroffice.co.uk domain or separate links from each sub page?

I would like to see your original question answered about using different sites on the same server. I have several sites on one host & IP so this question is one that interests me.

I am expecting a similar situation.....

Is it possible avoid a duplicate content penalty by using the robots .txt to disallow the files ?

Or will they be identified anyway ?

I have a number of domains, individually hosted - serving specific geographic areas - but would like to have visitors able to also click to the "Company Page" too.

I was going to upload a page to each site ???? Or are links back to the company site best ??? Certainly less work.

    Thanks ..... Dave

Well I found a couple of articles:

If you use the same hosting company for many sites and then start linking these together to try and improve the page rank you may get into trouble. It is not that difficult for the search engines to work out the IP address of the sites linking to you. If it finds that they are all on the same IP address this may be considered as link spamming. After all what are the chances that a group of genuine links from a number of different web sites are all going to be hosted on the same computer - not likely!.
