Thread: 3rd party stat program

    3rd party stat program

I use GoDaddy as my hosting company and paid for their Traffic Facts. However I'm not impressed with this particular site statistic aggregator especially since there's no way to filter out my personal computer's IP address. However I do have access to the raw logs it uses.

Is there a 3rd party stat program that I can run on my PC to parse the log files and provide better form and functionality (including filtering my IP)?

[I wasn't certain which WPW category this should be posted in.]

Have you seen Awstats before. I'm pretty sure it will do what you need

I appreciate the response cyanide. But it appears that AWStats needs to be installed onto the webserver, and requires modification of certain files and a restart of the Apache server. I'm using a virtual host from GoDaddy and don't have that access.

If my understanding is correct, and this particular stat program can't be used, it still leaves me wanting, and wondering why can't a local stat program simply parse and display log text files in a useable format, assuming there is none. I've been looking to no avail.

    Have you tried Sawmill?

    Hi Bill,

Why not give Sawmill a try? I'm sure it can be run either from your own PC, OR on the server. If you have access to the raw logs, you should be in business in no time! :o)
You can filter results, generate all manner of reports (the latest version seems to have quite a few additional features).

You can also go with Webalizer http://www.webalizer.com/

What is nice about the program is you can completely configure the output and filter, group, hide, ignore visitors based on ip, domain, browser type, search string, etc...

You can also create multiple conf files depending on your mood and output the report into different directories.. (i.e. just search engine traffic)

As new spiders, ISPs, search engines come into play, you can add them to the conf file so an accurate picture of your web traffic can be created..

Do a search on your favorite SE for
"webalizer.conf hacking" ,update , etc.. and you can find a few examples.. or email me and I will send you mine..

Thanks for the tips fellas. I'll check in to both of them. I really need a filtering capability, and I think it's absurd that GoDaddy - which charges a few bucks monthly separately for their "enhanced" reporting - doesn't have that ability. I've requested it a few times.
