The top banner of ads is a bit much, though I understand it might provide some cost cover on your hosting.

Color scheme seems generally okay, though note you are 3-4 pixels "off" from matching the rounded edge of your blue-header with the rectangle.

"Click on the picture to..." goes to neverneverland, at least for IE 6.0 - might want to rethink that?

And finally, the fonts are WAY too big. Garish, even. I would really recommend sucking down to +2 at most, or CSS it to 11pt or something. Maybe it's a personal thing, but I dislike too much color in copy that is not a link, etc. Italics and so forth do plenty there (speaking of, use italics and no quotes since it's a book?). This font thing continues on inside-pages as well, though a couple have a nice 10-11pt Arial I would recommend you consider throughout - even the fact that it is a rather unconventional blue seemed okay against the rest of your color schema.

Links on the sidebar, may as well go white, and I wouldn't underline them unless you use CSS to hover an underline on mouseover events. Why? No reason, just my personal opinion - pretty obvious it is your navigation, the site is not overly complex or dense with 500 pages or anything, so just my $0.02 - good luck.

Your book sounds very interesting, but the site doesn't quite do it justice. Unless/until you add additional books to the site, I'd take the site design cues from your book cover. Pick a complementary or matching color scheme, and as suggested earlier- tone down the fonts.

While I'd usually recommend a sans-serif font for web work, you might want to use a serif like Times New Roman- it'll give it a bit more 'romantic' feel (poetry) as well as a literary feel. Write your content more in the style of a book, possibly even indenting paragraphs. You need to have someone with English as a first language run through your content and proof it- the grammatical errors aren't jarring, but they're there.

If you can't afford the hosting fees for a website that doesn't require banners, I'd be even more strict about tightening up your copy and re-arranging the page without the blue bar so that your content is as high on the page as possible and minimizes the prominence of the banner ads.

You might also want to stop and consider the purpose of your site- are you trying to make a serious marketing effort for your book, or do you want more of a social page? If it's serious marketing and you want to get attention for the book, I'd lose the link to your other home page and the resources for gay tours and work on filling the content with keywords as well as getting some links from other sites with gay literature, general poetry, publisher sites, reviews on gay/poetry boards that reference your link, etc. If it's social- a resource for people who've heard of the book the afore mentioned content is ok. There's nothing wrong with trying to build a community around the book and its theme- but as the site stands it looks like you're mixing up the two possible directions.

About your contact page... are you sure you want to put your home address on there considering the content of your book? Maybe it's safer to be out in Brazil, but I'd consider getting a post office box if you want people to be able to contact you directly. In the U.S. that would be a bad way to find a gay-bashing jerk on your doorstep some day.

Good start, and good for you for writing and promoting your own book!
