Search engines spiders not indexing images for images search

Can any explain how search engines spider for their images searches? We use ALT tags on all our graphics but nothing comes up when searching in the images search. I can find all the pages with those images when doing a text search.

Which engine are you looking at? I know Google takes forever to update their image database. I also find that images get indexed better for me if I link to the actually image within the directory instead of making the image clickable to another web URL.

I'm looking at both Google & Yahoo. Half my images are inside <a href> tags so that my be a problem since the other images not inside clickable tags don't have Alt tags.
