    Scroogle - check it out!

    Check out http://www.scroogle.org/

This is a search engine that shows you the Google results before the recent update, and then shows the current results.

WHOA! I used to do SEO for a living, but now I don't even keep track of my rankings. Especially on the Catalyst site, since I'm not really looking for new clients right now.

Just used the tool for fun and checked - affiliate management consultant - saw all the sites that were missing - then decided to go to Google to see how far down I was.

Catalyst is #2 out of 339,000 and the top site isn't even relevant. So that's why I keep getting so many calls lately from potential new clients. Maybe if you ignore your site and rankings for awhile Florida likes them better, dunno. I sure have not had time to work on that site for awhile.

I am getting sicker. I am now at least 27 in my rankings where I have been as high as 4 for months.

People who were like 97 are now 20 positions above me! I don't even have Google in my logs this month and they have all old pages that don't even exist after a site redesign.

    I don't get it.

    Scroogle

    Interesting find, Catalyst.

This may well vary depending on the keywords or phrases used in the search but I just entered some of the more common ones for my site/profession.

What I see listed by Scroogle as having been dropped from the top 100 are a lot of minutes of meetings, old newspaper articles going back 3-5 years in some cases, resumes posted by university faculty or students, tertiary references in small onscure directories, that sort of thing. When I look at the new top 100, my impression is the results are a lot more relevant, and I don't say that because my site has necessarily improved for all keywords - it hasn't. But now at least it seems to me it's more likely to be listed with newer more relevant information.

I think this toll may fall into

Don't use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our terms of service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google.

But like I said I think I'm not sure

    Better Results

I agree with Minstrel, the Google results in my area are far more relevant than they were six months ago. Back then there were sites sitting in the top ten that had not been modified or updated literally for years. Today we see sites that would have languished previously. The sites at the top six months ago were sites with huge numbers of incoming links generated some years ago. My site which I have just moved to a new domain name has literally five incoming links and ranks in the top five in twenty keyword searches whilst some which have been displaced had 3-5 thousand links. Maybe links are not as important anymore?

Google did the Google dance which has not been done in a long time.

But they also used a new filter on some search terms which they felt might have been abused.

Some search results changed just because of the dance, while others changed because of the new filter.

The ones everyone are upset about are the ones that changed due to the new filter.

    Automated submission / reporting software

    Hi folks

I'm pleased to say that, looking at the Froogle site, most of my entries have gone up, only 1 or 2 have gone down. I'm particularly pleased about this from the perspective that I use WebPosition Gold for most of my submission and report gathering work (hell I'd be sitting here 24 hours a day if I didn't !).
All of which hopefully suggests that it doesn't do any harm and that Google's 'rules' are just talk (I hope !).

In fact, it's got me wondering if using auto software has been a benefit to my rankings ?? Although in reality, I can't see how.

The only thing I would say is that I agree with many who say that auto submission software can be a drain on server resources if it is misused. I deliberately allow plenty of delays between submissions and, more importantly, when I'm reporting I do so only once a month (not every day like some I have met !). So perhaps being curteous pays off too. As in life, I'd like to think so :-)

    Regards

P.S. Thanks for the tip about Froogle, Catalyst. I'd never heard of it before - interesting stuff.

do you have details of how the new filter behaves (or a url with details) please ?

I can't find any useful info from any of my usual sources - perhaps that says something about my usual sources :-(
But thanks in advance if you can signpost me :-)

    Help

I can't figure this out. Google had us on 2nd page for a search term for months and we used the ad words which didn't do anything for us so we stopped the ad and then we got taken out of google all together. Using scroogle.org using the search term we would be #10. Does anyone has any insight on what is happening?

    Thanks,
    Angela
