    Designing a 100 pages website.

    hi guys,

I am planning to create a website which will have more than 100 pages. What is best way to create these pages in dreamweaver. i also have the following questions.

    1) If i use dreamweaver template. Will it be easy to maintain the website. If so where i will get the tutorial for dreamweaver templates.

    2) Where i will get step by step procedure to create a big site (around 100 pages).

    3) How can i maintain the site ( like changing the colors, fonts etc)

    4) How i can maintain contents.

    5) Is there any other thing i should consider before i start designing the pages.I will be using asp with backend sql server.

    regards

    Hi Raj,

Content content content. Make sure you know what in detail is goingg to make up that 100 pages. Then you can decide on your navigation and if you will graphically diferenciate sub sections of the site or go for one single look.

Before any of the usual suspect chip in with it. If your going to go to 100 pages then CSS not dreamweaver templates is going to be the easy way to maintain and alter the site.

I'm sure if you checkthrough some of the topics onhere you will find a good CSS tutorial and how they can be used with Dreamweaver.

    Raj,

A 100's pages website is terrible ! Creating it only with Dreamweaver could look like... amateur ?
Yes, amateur probably. Maybe you should consider writing a DYNAMIC website, it seems difficult to imagine a 100 pages "100% static" website.

PHP + MySQL could be a good DYNAMIC solution to consider, it is free, with a lot of re-usable scripts, and tons of support everywhere including us here at WPW.

It all depends on your needs, traffic and your servers platform. As httpman said, it would dynamic is the way to go. PHP & mySQL or ASP & Access all depends on your preference. Templates can be ok depending on your design skills, but it would be difficult to update page content. 100 pages of static content is hard to maintain.

I wouldn't use dreamweaver templates beyound 25 pages.

Anything above 25 pages I would go for a content management system preferably CSS based.

    I would recommend

    Raj,

Give us some idea of the content areas, the purpose of the site and your level of experience/what you know technically and we can probably narrow it down a bit more.

    Thank u guys.

    hi guys,

Thank you very much for your comments. As per your suggestions and experience i would prefer to go to php and mysql. I have the following doubt.

Shall I can store the contents in database and display it in pages. if so i should create a front end (Screen) to add contents to the database or is there any free content management software available in the net.

    thanks,

    regards

I am not a PHP expert, but last summer I had to resot to this code since I had to overhaul a 21-page site in 11 (eleven!) languages. I encountered some difficulties with some of these languages (Russian, Turkish and East-European) when using MSQL. There's probably an easy way out, but I had no time to try for too long (one week with poor results was enough), so I settled for normal txt files that did not interfere with some of the characters. They can be easily edited on your computer without having to open Apache (and close your Internet connection). As for the 'templates', I needed only 11 'master' files for the 210 files plus 4 different style sheets. I must say that it took me some time before I disentangled the matter. My only suggestion is planning everything accurately, away from the computer, just go away from there, sit at your kitchen table with all your material and lots of scrap paper and you'll solve everything much better and faster.
