New to the Web
Hello, I want to introduce myself and ask for some advice. I am new to the web and I am currently a student at a community college. I built a site called www.totalgems.com as a school project for my dad and now it is an actual site. I am having a lot of trouble with getting into search engines. I used a service before but i think i got banned from google due to their practices so now that i have time, i am taking it over. Does anyone know of a service that can go into my website and help me figure out why it is not coming up in the search engines. it has been about 3 months since i fired that company and i think i have everything "legal" now but i am not sure.
thanks

Hi tatooz,
You have come to the right place. There are many people willing to help.
First I would ask if you are listed on the Open Directory (ODP)? Having a link to your site from a popular and highly ranking site carries a great deal of weight with search engine ranking. The ODP has very strict application procedures and does not guarantee acceptance. But they offer support to help with the procedure. After my first submission I watched the link spread through out the other directories over the months. It is a slow growth but it will get you to the front of the searches. Of course there are many factors that effect page rank. Everone else can fill you in.
As far as the site being banned, I haven't had experience with that. (thank goodness) I would guess one option might be to change the domain name and start again. I have had to change a name due to infringement of trademark and it is not as bad as it sounds. Besides we found an even better name. Anyway, you might find other solutions as you visit the different forums.
Have fun and Best wishes,
C-Ya 'round the forum!
