The fast answer is to get connected with Perry Marshall, the widely recognized AdWords guru. His free five day course will answer most of your questions and you can then give serious consideration to buying his Definitive Guide for less that $50.
I'm not, let me assure you, an affiliate of his, so this is simply an unsolicited testimonial. I am, though, a very satified follower of his commonsense advice.
You can find his main site at http://perrymarshall.com/google/index.htm

Heal3r: Ha, ha, but not guilty as charged, I do assure you.
And with a nod in the direction of one of our resident gurus, cbp, it seems worth recalling a favourite phrase in dmoz editor forums: There's no such thing as a dumb question, only a dumb answer.
In other words, WPW is bound to have people asking lots of questions and some of them the same ones over and over again. There's a continuing addition of new members, a growing awareness that answers can be obtained from fellow posters, and an ongoing and increasing interest in learning on the part of all of us. Moreover, there's the fact, I'm sure, that many/most of us are prepared to share what we've learned here. I do know that this is why I respond to posts such as the one from jezze.

    Jezze,

You have posted a lot of questions and I can't answer each and every one of them but I can answer a few.

Q.How can I get on the first page of Google search results?
A.Let's move on, we might be able to answer that as we go forward.

Q.Do I really need a top position with Google?
A.You don't need to be number one but you should be
at least on the first page or at the top of the second or third pages.

Many times it's not advantageous to be a the very top. Some people automatically scroll down and intentionally avoid the first entry. Often by the time they get down to your ad, they've exhausted the first 4 or 5 entries and find interest in yours.

Q.I have lots of click but I'm not seeing enough sales of my products, what's going on?
    A. Your ad is probably not focused enough or your website has design flaws.

Q.How can I make my website successful on a limited budget?
    A. If your budget is limited you will have to do the work yourself. That means you must read and research what others are doing and what the experts suggest. It's time or money.

Q.I'm spending way too much per clicks, what can I do?
    A. You'll need to find better niche keywords. Overture's keyword tool is excellent for this. Don't feel you need to use keywords with high click
counts. Make use of the lower count keywords, use as many of them as you can. Their bids are not as high and you can claim that share that no one else is bidding on.

Q.I'm not getting high click thru percentages with my ads, what can I do?
    A. You'll have to improve your ads. Focus on writing ads that attract your target audience. Ask people questions in your ad copy. Make them think about their problems. Use emotion. Your ad should provoke an emotion or hit a nerve. i.e. Do you long to be thin? Do you want to be rich? Do you want to be debt free?

    Q. Is it a good idea to target local markets?
    A. Yes, depending on what you are selling.

    Q.How can I run my pop-ups?
A.Don't like pop-ups. Don't use or recommend them.

    Q. How can I run my ads without getting disabled all the time?
    A. Not sure what you mean. Where are your ads disabled and what is the reason?

Q.Where should I advertise, Google or Overture?
    A. I use both but each has it drawbacks.

Google has a bit more competition but you can still get keywords for as low as $.05. Ads are small so you have to use your words wisely.

Overture is more difficult to deal with. Ads have to be approved first so there's a delay. They disable ads if you don't follow the rules and the rules aren't always easy to understand. But you can still get good keywords that have less competiton than on Google and your ads can be longer.

    Q. How can I find great hidden keywords for cheap?
    A. Through research. There are some good tools out
    there.
    I use:
    Overture keyword tool

    Google keyword tool https://adwords.google.com/select/ma...KeywordSandbox

    Digital point keyword suggestion tool
    http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/

nichefinder is excellent. It has a one time fee of $77. They also offer a free trial.

Q.How can I compete with the big kajuna national advertisers?
    A. Examine what they have and make what you have
better. Find a variation on their theme.

Q.How can I get the right keywords cheap?
    A. Use some of the alternate pay-per-click options
such as Findwhat or goclick, 7search or Kanoodle.

Q.How can I eliminate unqualified visitors and stop wasting money?
    A. Your ads must precisely target your audience.
For instance if you sell blue widgets, you don't want to attract people that want red widgets. Be as precise in your ad as possible.

If you sell flat screen tv's, you don't want people clicking who are looking for traditional tv's. You must use as many descriptive words as possible while emphasizing the benefits.

A.How can I test and refine my ads?
    Q. Watch daily your clickthru rates. Write several ads and watch each one carefully. You'd be surprised how changing just one word in an ad can make a huge
    difference in clickthru rates.

Q.How can I find out how many competitors are bidding on my keywords?
A.Overture's viewbid tool will tell you who your competitors are and what they are paying.

There are lots of great ebooks and tools out there.

    Dizzy

Absolutely. I benefit from repeated questions and repeated answers often enough so be sure my jesting is certainly playful.

The list of questions still looks a bit fishy to me though...

Articles are a very inexpensive way of building a solid foundation for your site.

Submit to the top 100 directories.

You must have a solid tracking program for your site which also can track your PPC campaigns.

It will take you a long time to get on top of all those questions. I recommend a more focused attack. For example, take on mastering your PPC ROI and outsource your linking and submittals.

I understand working with a limited budget, and I understand competeing with much bigger companies.

Avoid competing head on, find a way to use their efforts to benefit you, and find a way to set yourself apart. Like Allstate did with Geicko. One offers service, the other, 15 minutes.

Hard to effectively answer your questions without more information.
