In my experience as an editor that was not at all how it was. Of course, I was an editor for the US and for a few general categories, so I don't know how it was in all areas. But it was NOT easier to go out and find new material; it was easier to pull from the queue and we tried like heck to keep up and to be fair. I am not saying there weren't any corrupt editors, but they were rare as far as I could tell. And there were so many vigilant editors watching over your shoulder that I find it hard to believe there was any rampant corruption.

Wrong. Why do so many people make up these things?

MJ: how long ago was that exactly? Nowadays they get in the area of thousands of submissions that are pure garbage and spam/adsense and the like type sites, 'daily'.

A few years now, and you might be right. But even then there were plenty of spam submissions in the queue, but it wasn't that much trouble to delete them ... that also depended on the category. Some were/are far more prone to spam submissions than others.
