All your doing when you search for the above is bringing back pages from your domain that have the words historic, real, and estate in them.

But hey what do I know.

Joe, if you want to trace your backlinks you do:

    link:www.oldhouses.com

But that will only show a few and is only a quick guide. One of the links was interactivedreamz.com . So now try searching on that site for your link text:

    site:interactivedreamz.com oldhouses

That will show you have seven links on that one site.

bbot where are all the quality backlinks?

I see links only from forums that you probably asked similar questions like the one above. I would pursue more links from related industries to NJ web design, specifially web sites and companies that are also in NJ like you are. This will greatly help you.

So I'm thinking to myself, hey... this post seems eerily familiar, then I remembered - http://forums.seochat.com/showthread.php?t=15000

What's the matter? We weren't smart enough for you over there?

Just kidding... I still don't understand why that one guy is ranked on top.

Well first - I like you design innovation - nice site!

There are still a few things you can do - some easy, and some with a bit more dedication.

    1. turn the NJ Web Design text at the bottom into a link to mainpage (you also may wish to get your city in there as "local search" induces a major impact to regional queries.

Make individual links >web design< >City< >New Jersey< and you can use in link style to drop the link underline for website appeal. (don't do this in CSS as all links will lose the underline and loss of visitor navigation).

    2. Expand your directory. I truly recommend using Gossamer Threads. It is a free self contained CGI directory and upgrading to full version (about $450) but best to start with "free" and upgrade once you have a good repository of sites available. The best values of Gossamer are the auto backlink checker and submitter notification of accept or reject... both are extremely powerful tools to assist you in developing a darn good directory that can (over time) stand on its own merits. Keep this is your website domain (as a sub directory) and go for general interest categories.

If built into your current website link architecture you gain alot via the link exchange process with a caveat towards my point #1.

    3. Your greatest disadvantage right now though is "content" noting Google saturation - a 35 page website is really small and would suspect (I didn't check - but a good bet) that the bulk of websites listing near the top have far more pages than you do.

Develop a forum, a blog, a article CMS... anything that can capture interest of others to "give" content so you need not write it all (possibly in exchange for links for copyright).

You can develop links until you are dead but links "are merely" an extention of content and unless both develop coherently it is a futile effort.

    4. PPI - I cannot say it enough - spending a little money to gain "unique" links that many don't bother with "because there are tons of free ones out there" is an extremely good investment.

By far http://www.bluefind.com is the best buy ($50 - listing) or ($100 - sponsor) you will find today. As SEO's are involved in that directory they appreciate the value of "anchor text" - and without looking I would say a couple of links there (topical & regional) will significantly help your cause - your competitors aren't there yet.

    5. Complementing partnerships - a single company with a single motive will always have a difficult time gaining in SEs. Mutual benefit - offers mutual rewards - and also has "Fail Safe" involved simply because it is mutual... find a couple of these potential opportunities and you (with them) will grow farther and faster than either alone...

    It is all about Synergy!

Isn't anything to do with "web design" the hardest thing to optimise for after "search engine optimisation"?

Looking at the backlinks to that site, I'd guess this the poison word phenomenon is also at work. Words like forum, links and search engine may be dampening the value of those inbound links.

    Anchor text!

Anchor text is soooo important and I can see you didn't put that much emphasis on it. As exemple, when you get to the page "http://www.ewebdevelopment.net/services.htm", you should see keywords on those links. More what? What "more..." means for Google? Be creative.

Links pointing to your site are also VERY important. They should have anchor text too. Trying to compete with keywords such as "design company" with a PR3 page is not enough. Get powerful links back to your site. There are plenty of websites for web designers out there.

    Adding content would also help.

One last thing, I don't think you put enough emphasis on "New Jersey" if that's what you want to rank with. Beside your meta tags, I can only see it 3 times on your main page. Don't rely too much on alt's cause Google don't give much importance to them.

You have something decent in your hands so don't give up. It will pay off.

    Good luck!

    Great insight and feedback

The feedback for this topic is excellent, and though none are specifically addressing my site--it all applies. It's been VERY helpful and I thank you all for being so generous with your knowledge and experience. You are storing your treasures in heaven on this one and it is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Angie
