    Allinanchor question...

    Hi,

I am trying to get a site ranked high in Google on some competitive keywords and I have been using a mixture of a few different anchor texts to...
    1) Prevent over using a particular anchor text keyword and
    2) Target a few different keywords.

When i run the 'allinanchor:' command in Google we come up #1 for one of our keywords... yet we only rank #15 (second page) for that keyword.
*We are first page in the 'allinanchor:' search results for most of our top keywords but we do not rank first page in Google for any of them.

    How can this be?

**We are very careful who we link to etc. and we have PR5 so I know we are not banned by Google.

Anchor text is important, but other things count - over a 100 of them.

The "allins" are a poor guide to how you rank - all they tell you is how you rank for the "allin" - thats all they do...

Update: The keyword that was #15 has risen to #12 in Google as of a couple hours ago.
I think there might be some kind of update starting... wouldn't that be nice after a long summer of no Google updates.

I've done some more research since I started this post and discovered that we still need to have Google update our overall backlinks.
I think this is causing us to stall at our current position. I know for a fact we have a comparable number of backlinks to the top 10 sites in our genre but Google has indexed a few hundred more for these sites which leads me to believe we will be there some day (who knows when though?).

I do know the anchor text backlinks are very powerful and helped us rise from #545 to #44 in Google for our top keyword (*which is very competitive... it returns aprox 1,000,000 search results and this particular keyword is worth aprox $1,100.00 per day in Overture/Adwords.

I've done a lot of on-page optimization of course too and this is where I'm getting lost a bit... I'm using the title tags properly, alt text, headings, keywords, description etc.
I'm writing original articles and trading them with high PR link partners.. everything I can think of to help.
I'm wondering if I'm 'missing' something here...

My gut feeling is to lay off new links for a while and just see if Google raises our backlinks to reflect the real numbers.
I'm very concerned about jumping the gun and adding a huge whack of new links and de-stabilizing our current rankings (*which are good on some keywords).

Any more thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Google do update the backlinks frequently and regularly for their internal use and they are reflected in the search results. They just do not display them all publically, so do not base any interpetation you see on what Google show as the backlinks to a site.
