The meta tags (for what they are worth) should reflect what the page is about.

Hi cbp,
I was interested in your statement: "The meta tags (for what they are worth)..."
Just what are the meta tags worth on a page, and if you could, explain what part they play in the overall scheme of being found be search engines. All other factors aside.
Thanks,
Rick

The meta tags are pretty much worthless, except the title tag is very important. SE's other than Google do appear to put minimal emphasis on the keyword and description tags - the rest are not worth it.
The only ones I put on sites now are the title, keyword(s) (ony a few words), and the description (one sentence to include title and keywords) - and make sure they match the anchor text of incoming links and the H1 and text of that page.
All the other meta tags clutter up the page and the SE crawlers have to crawl through them to get to the stuff that really counts.

Thank you for the tag information. I do have another question or two. If you'd be so kind. You said "keyword(s) (ony a few words)". Is it the same for all the top search engines? Also, I once heard someone advocate using only one single relevant keyword on each page. Is this a practical approach?
Thanks again.

I aim to optimise each page for only one keyword or keyword phrase - then have the meta tag keywords match that ---- there is not a lot of point putting a whole lot of words in the keyword tag that the page is not set up for.

CBP I have a site that has alot of pages should all pages be submitted to the search engines with only a few keywords for each page. Or submit only a few pages? Thanks,
Ed
Thanks for the tips CBP.

Don't waste your time submitting any. It does not help and makes no difference.have a site that has alot of pages should all pages be submitted to the search engines with only a few keywords for each page. Or submit only a few pages?

Once your pages have been indexed I agree with CBP that you do not have to submit new pages as they will be indexed by the search engines simply make sure that they are linked to one of your high PR pages.
