Use keywords/phrases that match your products.
only that?.. cause if you run a , let's say surf/skate shop.Originally Posted by Dave Hawley

that's why i was wondering if you could better uptimice for let's say cheap skate gear. or skate shop.
any opinions?
I suggest that you take out a one day subscription to Wordtracker and spend a few hours researching what phrases searchers are using.
There are a couple of caveats, though. Just because the term like gifts has more traffic than a term like childrens gifts do not automatically optimize for that until you see what kind of competition there is for each term and whether it is a term that would result in sales for your site. In trying to see how competitive a term is I recommend using the price of a #1 ranking at Overture for the term as a quick guide, and looking at the top ten results for each search term to see how well they are optimized.
In general what you are looking for are terms which real searchers use, have lots of traffic, are applicable to your pages and are terms which sell.
