    The next couple Penguin updates

As you know, many SEOs are eagerly awaiting a Penguin update but Matt Cutts, the head of search spam at Google, said "you don’t want the next Penguin update." He warned that the Google "engineers have been working hard," on this update.

He even added the next few updates will be "jarring and jolting" for webmasters and SEOs.

Good one williamc! Reading the first group of comments below the article are funny even with a bit of cursing. One comment stood out.

Matt, can you please tell us exactly what to fix now then so we are not caught off guard? Don't give us the secret sauce, just be transparent and say "watch your linking text" or "check your HTML for inadvertent alt attributes with keywords in them" or "delete all your old links on "put-it-there-yourself" pages (or nofollow them)" or whatever this new penguin eats That would be awesome transparency that does not give anything new away, just focuses our efforts. Thanks!
EDIT: Matt just responded to me on twitter:
**from @mattcutts "... saw your comment on Barry's post. Certainly links are a primary area to monitor. Been true all this year; expect to continue."**

Thanks for the Spam comparison! This makes it perfectly clear why I was so confused about SEO and applying some wrong principles.

I've seen conflicting SEO and website design advice from the Google folks. I'm going to start a list and will post when I get a few. Give me a while to get this together.

It seems that Google has taken the "transparency" approach a bit too far. Anyone else see the patent they just got where they talk about purposely displaying various rankings, so that they can "out" Spammers? It's absurd.

One of the bigger disadvantegous set of guidelines is the Adsense term routinely suggests I add additional units, but the Spam team says I can be penalized for too many ads or ads above the fold.

Well, the SEO technique is working fine as it was working before!

With the penguin update, the main changes we are seeing is we have to target multiple anchor text for one url and we have to build links natural and we have to give more importance to content.

About penguin updates, I would say it is like page rank update, no one would know when the next pr or penguin update would happen..

@ deepsand - Awesome comparison. This is truth that Google want from us to stop spam while it is doing this. What should webmasters do ?

Don't rely on Google's organic SERPs to bring you traffic.
