I have never sold books. . But like anything else, if there are people wanting to buy it is far easier to sell. I am a great believer in finding out if an item will sell as a simple first step . (before I committed myself to any system)

A simple site that presents my titles would be where I would start. Because despite popular belief, you can rarely solve marketing problems until you find out exactly what they are. A simple site will present you with the problems you require.

Your question requires whittling down to make it answerable.

    Don't Go For Wordpress

I suggest not to choose Wordpress, undoubtedly Wordpress is one of the most successful solution in the world of Internet but not when it comes to eCommerce or Shopping Cart due to some security breaches people have concerns about it. You need a shopping cart a quick solution a ready and customized theme for book store. So you can get online ASAP after quick work of some Integration like payment gateway etc. Interspire is a good option although Interspire has shifted to Bigcommerce yet some affiliates has the script ready to launch With Hosting and several unique themes related to every niche of Shopping Online including Book Stores..

I thought WooCommerce is pretty good? WordPress is made to be versatile enough to accommodate dramatic changes to the original blog structure. I have seen some very clean and elegant online stores built with WordPress + WooCommerce.

If you can promote your books via your blog, that would be a great incentive for your readers. If you enjoy writing, gather an audience through your blog by writing on a daily basis, and sharing your writing through social networking. Perhaps your blog topic is even in the same realms as your books. You can then simply advertise or provide a shopping cart to purchase your books on your own blog (which won't cost you anything). If you decide to use a 3rd party like Amazon to sell your books, be sure to check their publisher rights, and % cut of your sales.

I think WP e-Commerce remains the most popular, most robust e-commerce plugin for WordPress and is the ideal way to sell products, downloads or services online. Also WooCommerce is a good cart. If you have a lot of products to sell then use opencart.

I would suggest staying away from trying to put an shopping card plugin into a wordpress site. Chances are you're not going to be as happy with the results at you'd hope. I would suggest starting with an eCommerce platform that is based off of a subscription model and also has a great blog function.

The three I like the best are.
    1.) Bigcommerce.com
    2.) Soveryn.com
    3.) Volution.com

That's exactly what I would recommend to people who are new to online eCommerce and doesn't have an arm and a leg to spend on development / technical support teams. I myself has various stores that use Magento and WordPress (WooCommerce plugin), while it is great to have my own complete control over the websites, it does take A LOT of time to keep things in place (security, upgrade, backup, etc.). Never used any of the above providers but I've used Shopify. The time I have saved by using them is already worth the money I pay to them.
