Google Adds Copyright Removal Notices To Its Search Algorithm

From the front page of WebProNews:

...“Sites with high numbers of removal notices may appear lower in our results,” says Google SVP, Engineering, Amit Singhal. “This ranking change should help users find legitimate, quality sources of content more easily—whether it’s a song previewed on NPR’s music website, a TV show on Hulu or new music streamed from Spotify.”...

Also, read the article about this written by Danny Sullivan of SEL. He even bubbed it "Emanuel Update". It can be missused if it will be done completely automatically through algorithm. I think it should involve human review before penalizing any site through this update. Though at present Google gives the counter-challenge for any DMCA but when this update will go live, people will go mad to demote their competitors by issuing DMCA against them.

    Yes
"when this update will go live, people will go mad to demote their competitors by issuing DMCA against them." - my sentiments exactly.
We have this problem in the "real world" already with false complaints already and SEO is about as cut-throat as it gets!
IP is shaping up as THE major battlefield on the web as trademark and copyright owners seek to stem their losses from IP thieves.
Our business is only small in the scheme of things and IP theft is perhaps our number one source of losses!
Google and the like may not like to employ humans to do their work, but I can't see an easy way out for them in terms of future IP battles - especially when some aggrieved parties start suing them for losses!
    All the best
