    Question Web 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and beyond

If you use the Tags when you post here at WPW you will note that web 2.0 and web 3.0 tags are an automatic option here. Today I found this:

Web 2.0 and Beyond: Principles and Technologies

    book written by Paul Anderson

    Biography
Paul Anderson is a writer and technology forecaster for Intelligent Content Ltd. and was recently technical editor for JISC TechWatch, a horizon scanning service for UK universities. A graduate in computer science from the University of Leeds, he has worked for more than 25 years in industry and academia as a software developer, technology transfer officer, and technology futures specialist. He has also written extensively for a range of education, trade, and current affairs publications and was awarded the EPSRC's Computer Science Writer of the Year prize in 2007.

In addition if you book search for web 2.0 on Amazon you get some hits.

    And here

Web 3.0 - The Semantic Web: High-impact Strategies - What You Need to Know: Definitions, Adoptions, Impact, Benefits, Maturity, Vendors

is a book about Web 3.0 - The semantic web ...

I have tagged this thread with web 2.0, web 3.0, web 4.0, web 5.0, web 6.0. It is too early to know the future, but some claim that it is just around the corner.

    "web 3.0"

book search on Amazon gives more hits than you would ever imagine.

Learning to Use the World Wide Web 4.0

most probably have 4.0 in the title for other reasons. The book was published in June 1998. Other results for web 4.0 give none serious results in my opinion. Other members may mean the the whole

    web x.0

is a misnomer (not sure if that is the correct term since my native language is Norwegian).

    So my question is:

What will Web 4.0 and beyond be about?

    An old article from PCWorld:

Web 4.0 Era Is Upon Us

A more or less serious thread from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C):

    Web 4.0: Start planning now.

    Here Comes Web 4.0...

The Internet continues to evolve and the nature of content is changing. We're on the brink of Web 3.0 - but what's to follow? This post introduces and examines "Web 4.0".

Web 4.0 may be considered to be the immersive generation in which 3D is combined with Web 3.0, or the Semantic Web, to create virtual worlds such as those currently found in gaming. A key factor in this world will be the digital rights tether which prevents the digital copying (perfect copying) of content. The digital tether is relevant for all forms of content and becomes a major issue for high value (high cost) information such as copyright on movies, images, and more.

Wow, that is an interesting conversation starter!

In my opinion, web 4.0 has to be something similar to Google's Project Glass (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Glass). I don't see what else web 4.0 could be. I've heard people talk about the future of the web being 3d worlds like second life, but I don't see that taking off with the majority of the population. We have that already, and most of us don't participate.

Instead, Web 4.0 has to be about merging the web with the real world through mobile devices. The Glass Project is one example, but there are plenty of other way to do this using mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. There are already several augmented reality applications on mobile devices. For example, Google Glasses does a search by taking a picture. Yelp and a few others displays local places where they would be in real life using the camera, and there are others.

I believe applications like that and devices like the glass project are the future of the web, or web 4.0.
