Proper blog commenting can generate the backlinks. But after Penguin Update it has become risky.

It does have benefits except you need to make sure that your blog comments are not marked as spam e.g. include one link instead of two.

Well you can thank the spammers for you having to wait.

It is only risky if you don't do it properly. i.e. read the post, make a valid contribution to the topic and don't link drop.

How about not including any links at all in your comment. BTW: a Wordpress blog owner can set all comments to be moderated so leaving any link not appplicable to the discussion will most likely get you spam canned or banned.

if you comment on "Do Follow" blogs then it could be good.
First of all, find the relevant(read in capital) blog posts.
Make good comment(avoid being selfish and writing irrelevant comments as they wont do any good to you as well as to the blog post you are commenting on)
If you do selfish and spammy comments, most probably your comments would be tagged as spams and will go unpublished.Wastage of time (your's and administrator's) and reputation of your blog.
As a blogger, i myself face the same problems, and i have to allow only 10% comments that are relevant and appropriate.
(for an example, on one of my SEO posts one commentator wrote about the benefits of e cigarettes with a link in it about the same niche

For me commenting is the best way to get exposure and traffic to a blog. But without these there are many other awesome benefits we get through commenting.
Asking questions in the comment, can start a debate with the author, and this way you’ll increase you knowledge through that debate. Asking questions and helping others can empower you a great quality and knowledge.
I learn most through debate, commenting and asking questions to Probloggers. Lets read the benefits by commenting Now .
    1. You’ll be Recognize: Commenting regularly on various blogs, will add a recognition to your name, and you’ll be properly visible in the blogosphere. You’ll be known, by your blog, Cool?.
    2. Growth in Traffic: Comments on High PageRank blogs increases your blog Traffic, also gives you more readers. Moreover if the reader liked your content. He/she can also be your blog’s loyal reader.
    3. A way to get Exposure: Somehow, it is also a way of getting Exposure. Believe or not, I get most of my readers and exposure by commenting regularly on various popular blogs.
    4. Backlinks (Dofollow only): You will also get backlinks from commenting but by commenting on dofollow blogs. But the blog giving nofollow links, cannot build Backlinks.

Why? I do not agree, of course if this is not automatic spam.
Links from comments I use for create a mix of link (from articles, social bookmarks, directories, press-releases etc) types to site.

Keep in mind your moderator approval rate may go way up if you're name/anchor text is not an exact keyword match which just looks spammy. Take a look at the other posts to see what type of names/anchor text is being used (e.g., keywords, random login, or first and last names). If all the other posts are by "First and Last Name" and you submit one called "Free Movies" its not going to get posted.

Yes, it still has benefit for your website as long as you are doing it right! If you use your targeted keyword as your name, then that's not a good idea because you are spamming the blog you are posting to. Use your real name or a fake name when blog commenting and make sure your comment is related to the topic as well.
