Take a look at your social signals, how many social backlinks? your rel=author implementation works if your authors are really social and linking to their original content through Google+ and optimizing their posts for organic listings.
Social Social Search is the next step in Search Engine Evolution into a Knowledge Engine.
Increase the Social Signals and your traffic will be back to normal if not better. Your Social traffic will increase first, then in the next update your social signals will boost your organic rankings.

frankly speaking when I look to almost anything of the "social" stuff > facebook etc. I only can see childish and old womens bla bla I am not a child and i am not an old women so what should I do there? 90% of this so called social stuff is an insult to any intelligent person, if this is the future of the internet, then "good night".

Social Signals Explained – What are they and how are they important? (socialmetricspro.com)

You may have a point about Facebook's demographics, but may be stretching it a bit far.

Social Demographics: Who is using today's biggest social networks? (mashable.com)

Granted, Facebook users are largely women, and the average age is over 45. I don't think we should view this as the direction the internet is going. If we were to conclude this, what could be said about Pinterest and its role in taking the web to new heights (sarcasm intended)?

With Google+, Bings new Social network called So.cl, yammer, foursquare, LinkedIn, Reddit, YouTube, Pinterest and yes Facebook too and many more, you can network with people in your niche or expertise, connect with them, share and re-share, become the expert on a subject. Then optimize your posts with bold text, use #hash-tags and keyword variation with descriptive text.
You will get +1's , shares, recommendations, tweets, followers and so forth wich of course will drive traffic to your site now, but in the long run you will gain additional traffic from search engines as these social signals are added into the organic results as we are already seeing now with Google+ and Bing.

Thanks Shawn. I think the rel=author code also helps to confirm with Google that the article is not scraped; that the author has given us permission to publish. I wish I could share your confidence that by doing more social we'll recover all of our traffic. Google hit us big time and it must be due to more than the fact that we don't interact much in the social media. We have been interacting huge amount in Linked in and a number of other high-profile sites where our customers hang out.

As part of our strategy, we are now ramping up our presence on Facebook. I'm a little sceptical, but I'm willing to devote some resources to see if it has an impact.

    Regards, Les

The thing is you need to ramp up your efforts on all social networks, this is very time consuming, I have about 20 social profiles where I network about 3 hours every day. This is driving immediate traffic, however I have been socially marketing my content to my main site for the past year and with the latest updates, my traffic has doubled in the last 2 months.

Have you authors engage socially for every post or article and have it link back. Every social network lets you link back, its how you link back is what matters. These URL's should include the keywords, title and a short description.Use Keyword variation in your Anchor Text, as most searchers type in different queries and in different countries could have different spellings or meanings, this is where the Knowledge graph and entities come into play for both Google and Bing respectively.

Have you checked your traffic sources in Google Analytics? Expand the menu and click on Social, you will see menus for:

    1. Sources & Pages: Identify networks & communities where people engage with your content.
    2. Conversions: Measure the value of social by tracking your goals, conversions and ecommerce transactions.
    3. Social Plugins: Measure your on-site user engagement.
    4. Social Visitors Flow: Compare traffic volumes and visitor traffic patterns through your site.

Using the Social Analytics tool you can see where your authorship may be helping in the organic listings by comparing your visitor flow and pages data by seeing what is shared and what is organic, then you can optimize from there.

one last thing I want to add on to this topic is use Bings webmaster tools and use their disavowel tool and get rid of those links that do not correlate to your niche market. You can have links come from low page rank sites or no-follow links as long as they correlate and have Anchor Text Variation that you want to rank for, it still give some relevance and importance, this counts towards organic rankings. Google will soon be coming out with this tool as well.

In short there is so much on page and off page optimization that you can do to increase your organic rankings, I like using Google's and Bing's Webmaster Tools to find out what the important factors are and use the data they provide through their tools to further effectively promote and optimize my sites for Social and organic Listings. I use these social networks to follow trending topics and people in my niche market, I comment, share and re-share<---the most important factor in Social Marketing (IMO) to gain the most social signals and traffic.

The latest Penguin and Panda Updates hit both offsite link building and onsite settings for seo.

The way to recover and get back on track is to be stable and consistent with your onsite and offsite seo efforts and engage into social media activity. I believe that Google is trying to teach us to get into interaction to be focused to drive traffic and not PR juice. So if the site has dropped, there is a chance to get it back up, bt some sites just gone out of index. No way to get them back... ever...

    Hi Guys,
A quick update, one of my other sites that was hit with the update has recovered from page no-where to page 2 for a keyword that generated 1100 unique visitors when the site was number 1 on Googles serp's ive had a few others move up.
The focus has been on profile links from higher PR social media sites, social book marks, relevent forums and new and fresh unique content on the sites - All work done manually.

We can see where some people are feeling a little enslaved. (Not to beleaguer the point.)
