Among the popular Database Systems like MySQL, PLSQL, MS access and Oracle, which is better for Java based development? Actually, I would like to start develop an Java based web application. Before I start doing it though, I would like to know which would be the best one (reliable, flexible and redundant in Java development environment)?

Depends what you want to do. MySQL is great for small to medium databases. Oracle is good for enterprise wide stuff with huge amounts of data. I wouldn't bother using Access for anything though.

@DaveSawers: Actually I would like to practice with Java and Oracle database combination to learn much of the things around both of these two but the investment is in question. I know If I go for MySQL database, it is open source and available for free but I don't have any idea about the pricing of Oracle database. Do I need to spend anything for Oracle database deployment version? or Is the deployment version available for free?
Depends on what you want to do. MySQL is ideal for databases SMEs. Oracle is good for enterprise-wide area with huge amounts of data. Do not bother me at all with Access though.
