JSON Data for front-end developers - please review
JSONData.com is entering into beta and we would love some feedback, especially if you're a front end developer. Please critique our copy, design and your thoughts on the use of the resource. We thick skin and want the best possible tool for our users - so fire away.
We created JSON Data to fill a need we have - to organize data like Google spreadsheets, then get some JSON embed code for visualization on our front-end projects. Let us know your thoughts and I will commit to update this thread as we make changes based on feedback.
No one's looked at this one yet, so let's give it a go.
The first thing I notice about your site is that it's almost a complete ripoff of Google+, Gmail, etc. You might want to start over with a more original design (or at least something that doesn't look like one of Google's pages).
Second, you may want to work on tailoring your content towards all users. Novice JSON users or users who have not heard of JSON before need to know what JSON is, why they should have JSON code on their site and why they should have some of your JSON scripts in particular on their site. Intermediate and expert coders and developers need to know what you've got available and if you have any applications they could use. Give them a menu of scripts you have available.
The "Featured Users" portion serves almost no use. They're just pictures of random people, and the pictures don't do anything when you click or mouseover them. Do these people have any significance? Instead of the "Featured Users" section I'd get rid of that whole bar, start up another section somewhere else on the page and create a "Testimonials" section instead.
Why should one sign up and create an account? If anything, talk about some of the perks members get. Also, talk about some of the scripts you have on your page.
Overall, the service of offering up JSON solutions is not a bad idea but people need to see what you've got and how they could use it. Also revisiting the design would be a great idea.
Thank you for jumping on this and really spending some time to comment - I am impressed by this community already. Your thoughts about the design are right on. Our first pass at this was based on using proven designs for launch, but see that change is needed. Based on your advice we will be tailoring our content for the full range of JSON users. The scripts, testimonials, demonstrations and benefits content have been in production - we wanted to test to confirm some of our hypothesis first. We have some developers that we hope will become our featured users + testimonials, those images will be dynamic when we have that worked out. Thank you for the great info - we are working hard to get JSON Data ready for our users.
