    embeded music

    Hello,
This might be complicated and I'm not even sure it can be done: Here's what I want to do ....

On my website, when you go to a certain page, I have embedded a music player into a picture that begins playing when you arrive on that page. There are seven more succeeding and similar pages, all with the same picture on them, but different text. What I want to happen, is the music continues to play on all the pages continuously.
As it is now, clicking on the next page, restarts the music. I want the same music to play on all these pages without restarting on each page.

This is only a 7 page SECTION of my site, so starting the music when you arrive on the SITE is no good, only when you go to page one of the seven page section should it play throughout those pages. I don't have it on loop so by the time you get to the seventh page it will have stopped anyway.

I have tried embedding the music player into the actual picture but it still restarts when you click to the next page.
I am wondering if I could put the music player into the hyperlink that goes TO the 7 page section? Then it would start on the first click?

Anyone have any ideas? Or even IF this can be done?
    Thanks if you can.

A browser is a 'shell', meaning it is self contained. Pages have no continuity beyond that which can be afforded by session cookies. Plug-ins invoked in one window cannot be continued in another window. They are in two different worlds, so to speak. What you want to do is not possible within the normal confines of the browser.

Thanks, I thought that was the case. Back to the drawing boards. I'll have to try something else. As the music is instrumental ambient mood, I might be able to fade in parts of it on each page and make it appear seamless.

Well, the only thing I can think of (and I'm sure weegilis is going to kick himself for not thinking this) is using an iframe for those seven pages.

Using the iframe for that 7 page section will take some coding in the way of editing your template to display a different header/page for that section, I believe, unless all your pages are static HTML pages.

If you use an iframe, the music clip will be in the top (or left, right, bottom) frame and the 7 pages will use that iframe code. What will happen is the iframe will always be in use and even if a link to the other pages is clicked, the music in the frame in question will still play while the frame remains active - that's sort of the nature of iframes.

You may and I stress may, have an SEO issue but if that's not your concern don't worry and if it is, it can be resolved.

I've put a player in a pop-up before. It plays till closed regardless of what you do in the site or if you leave. Of course many people block pop-ups..

Of course, you are not asking this question, so I'm treading lightly here! But... are you sure you want to do this? There are many viewers who want to be in control of their audio experience. Many are in an office/work environment, or some other "quiet" space, where clicking on a page that auto-plays music would be problematic for them. But you could give them the option to choose to play the music and then use the iframe solution!

Clever solution. But I got a better one....don't put the music. Putting music that plays automatically and can't be stopped is probably the number one reason people back out of a website and never come back. I know I never do. It's at the very top of usability no-nos.

To add to the no-no reasons, you are not going to play music that all, most or even some people like. In fact, when I go to a site and a bit of music starts playing, even if it's music I know and like, its most likely some "Mazak" version of a song that is bastardized so badly, making it even worse to listen to than something I don’t like - if that makes any sense. You know how Nike's tag like a while ago was "Just do it", I say "just don't do it".

I kind of think (maybe am assuming) that most people know onload starting music is a possible no no but we have to all admit, in our many years of being on the web we've found two things regarding this subject; 1. Some website owners don't give a damn, for any number of legitimate reasons and 2. There's a time and place for instant starting music, we've all visited websites where music started playing and it was actually alright.

Depending on the type of website, ambient instrumentals can really set the mood and some users won't notice a play button.
