    link text and Penguin

Most of my sites got a boost from Penguin, except for one. (I've never added more than 30 or 40 inbound links in a month to a site.)
But I am surprised that the site I did the most link building with rose in ranking with Penguin, while another that I did less link building with, crashed. It was a general half page loss for many keywords, along with major crashes for two keywords - specifically keywords that I use in link text...

The loss dates are perfect for Penguin.

About a year ago, the site did get hacked and hundreds of pages were added. I suppose there could have been some bad links added from that, though I cannot see them in GWT.

It just doesn't seem like the site should have taken the hit from Penguin. Is it safe to continue link building embedding keywords in the link text?

Did the sites linking to it get hit?

I think new Google Updates (Penguin) effect due the On-Page SEO factors, keywords stuffing in content, outbound links per page and landing page (doorway).

Penguin is primarily a link algo update. Panda is the content algo update. And both are recurring updates, not real time. The latest Panda update rollout was Friday.

I actually picked up a little boost as of Friday. But how would I know if sites linking to me got hit? The links are about a dozen link exchanges, a hundred or so directories that I've added, DMOZ, and the rest naturally accruing..

The main hit was the first roll out, seems like it was around April 24th.

This is what makes the job fun. How far back are you willing to research the sites that link to you and the sites that link to them? You would probably be safe in assuming the directories all lost their value, probably the link exchanges as well. What does that leave you with? What does WMT show you about the link profile?

First of all, let me ask you one thing, are you sure that Google is currently targeting unnatural links? I believe its wrong. Google has Page rank as the status for all the websites online. There are several blogs that I visit daily which has got thousands of OBL and most of them go to medicine, porn and irrelevant websites. But still their pagerank is stable as well as their reputation. I always believe getting links from good pagerank websites work well. If there's a website with pagerank 3 or more, try to get a link from it, this is what I do. But very importantly, the links that I get are with good quality thoughts or comments. So, I believe, Google can access the comment or note that we have left with the link and also check its quality. If this is correct, then work on getting links by providing valuable and best comments on the third party website or blog or forum.

I've asked this question before, but haven't gotten an answer. What happens to the PR of a site when its devalued by Google. Do you see a drop in PR? I guess you'd have to wait till toolbars update to be able to see that..

But I do have Many directories still in the link profile in GWT. It shows the top 187 IBL's, but when you download the list, there are close to 500. I did think I had more than that..

Can you explain this further, getting links by providing best comments? Its possible I can't imagine that because of website topics in my client list, i.e., medical and holistic healing fields..

Sites have no PageRank; only pages have PR.

And, the only "devaluation" that affects a page's PR is when one or more of its in-bound links are discounted.

Everyday I come across lot of comments on blogs and forums which are something like this "hey, thanks for your valuable information. I will recommend this website to my friends... blah blah blah..." Do you think this comment has something to do with the topic? I dont think so...

I believe when we comment something related to the blog post topic, we will have to include some keywords which are in that post on our comment. This will not be in purpose, but just happens. I believe Google can now understand that we have comments something related to the post and the topic, which I believe will and would give good value.

The toughest case is where the website is into a niche which we are not much aware of. In such cases (as you mentioned), we will have to read the post completely and get additional information on the same topic from other websites and then post the comment. I believe instead of commenting like what I mentioned in double quotes, if we can take some time and come up with quality comments, would be effective and its worth the time. What do you think?
