How do I get rid of white around images on Web photos

Does anyone know how to get rid of the "white" outline on photoshop files saved as gif files for the web?

Photoshop files all have been created/saved with transparent background at 300 dpi. I have been saving them in Photoshop 7 "save for web" as gif files after changing resolution to 72 dpi.

When placed in the dreamweaver file and posted on the web they have a "white" outline around them. I have tried everything I can think of.

I am used to working with images for print production not web production. I am sure it is something stupid that I just don't know about.

I think this is a similar thing to Fireworks.

When you export to a transparent gif there is also a 'Matte' option. It could be defaulting to white.

So change it to the background colour of the page you are using the images on.

Changes to graphics has increased orders

    Cyanide,
Just wanted to let you know that your great tip on eliminating the white around gifs has already increased our sales. We sell vintage designed t-shirts and we offer 85+ designs on 24 colors. On our website we wanted customers to be able to see all the designs on all the colors. The white around the images was really hampering the ability to see the design colors on the t-shirt colors. We spent a lot of time and money creating this and were getting way frustrated with how it looked. After your post yesterday I went back and redid all the gif images on the t-shirt order pages. The images are much clearer on the shirt colors and orders increased yesterday significantly. Thanks a billion.

Also, thanks for your post on the banner question.
