Google Link Popularity and PageRank questions...

    Hi,

One of my clients is getting me to learn SEO to help their e-commerce site sales.
I have 2 questions regarding Google:

    1) When I use the Link Popularity Checker at http://www.freewebsubmission.com/link-popularity.html
the results it brings back tell me we are linked an average of 40 times in all of the search engines except Google (*and All The Web too) which it says has only 9 links back to our site?

Why would this happen and what can I do to change that?

    2) Our Google PageRank has been at 3/10 on our main page for several months despite a huge effort to improve that number.
In the meantime almost the entire site has continually gained PageRank (*but none higher than 3/10 either) every month so I know our site isn't banned from Google or being penalized but I thought the main page would at least gain another PageRank point over the last 3 - 4 months.
any ideas why that would happen?
I'm assuming we need a lot more inbound relevant/quality links. Like hundreds more...

    Thanks in advance.

Google only shows a sample of the links to your site.

Try using the @ search as in @your-domain-name.com. Go to Google, perform an @ search, & see if that displays more links.

The page rank in google is based only on incoming links into your site. Make sure the links that you are getting are listed in google. The higher the page rank of the link, the more chance that your site will go up in Page Rank. Also if there are a ton of links on the pages that you are getting links from, there is much less page rank passed on to your pages.

When you do a link check with google, it will only show a sample of the backlinks and of those it usually shown only pages with a PR4+. Try using the @mysite.com search in google

usually shown only pages with a PR4+
for one of my sites more than half the backlinks are from sites with PR less than 4.
