On the basis of the usability, as far as I know, Unix is the OS mostly preferred mostly by the professionals, because of the added plugins and features that are required by the users. Windows is the OS which indeed is mostly used by the people all over the world, but it doesn't has as such a great professional use like that of Unix, MAC etc, but rather than that it is used more for the domestic purpose rather than any other OS, due to its user friendliness feature.
Higher? Meaning what?
While languages can be arranged hierarchically with respects to the degree that they represent an abstraction of the underlying microcode of the CPU on which they are executed - e.g., Machine Code, Assembler, pseudo-Assembler, Interpreter, pseudo-Interpreter, Compiler, pseudo-Compiler - not so the case with Operating Systems. Each OS is an abstract machine in its own right.
How does one develop a Windows application on an OS other than Windows? Any application must be developed on the target OS, even if it's a Virtual Machine running on a different OS.
Well I feel like your implying that I said NO people use windows. I never said that. But for certain languages where you can develop on either of the 3 I feel like windows would most often be the last choice. You see more web developers use macs/linux, since apace servers are based on linux so it just works better.
And higher was just a typo I meant used more when considering developers or higher in preference.
It remains fact that:
- Windows owns the desktop, particularly amongst institutional users; and,
- Applications perforce must be developed/tested on the target OS.
Still true, but with forward thinking companies bringing in bring/buy your own device (BYOD) policies, we are seeing that eroded.
As far as comparing OS flavours, so much more detail is required about the application, your background, the environment that the question is impossible to answer. Having said that, after 25 years in the industry I'll back Unix/Linux against pretty much anything![]()
