Joomla 17 Megabytes? Wordpress 4 Megabytes? What's So Good About Joomla?

I hated Joomla when I first tried working with it a few years ago. I felt it was too clunky and too complicated - maybe things have changed since then.

So very recently a client has asked me if I can do some work on a Joomla site for her. I said of course and as I write this, the Joomla files are uploading to one of my sites - and it's huge.

Why? What's so good about Joomla? Is it packed full of amazing features that Wordpress just couldn't touch? I'll find out in a minute but I highly doubt it. And if this Joomla gives me the same problems as last time, I just may go postal.

I'll let you know how this install and setup goes, and how simple or not Joomla is compared to Wordpress, as the day progresses.

Well what do ya know? No zippy!

I've uploaded the whole folder, and went to my site to start the install (take note I haven't read the instructions because I really believe I shouldn't have to if Joomla is to compare with Wordpress)...now what?

Oh, I guess I have to reach the Joomla forums or read the instructions - must be difficult...I'll get back to you...

I dont think there's anything particular yo can or cant do in either, but joomla does seem to have a more technical backend than wordpress.
Personally I like wordpress for the ease of creating content and just publishing it, but I love Joomla for being able to customise as you go along. You may well feel its too complicated at first glance, but you probably felt the same way when you first looked at wordpress, it just takes a bit of getting used to but I'm sure it wont take you long.... got a feeling youve been messing around with websites for a while now morestar.

OK well I'm exited about trying this software out. I didn't go further than my blank home page (no setup, no installation) and didn't find time to check out the forums yet but I did get a change a moment ago to check out the demo - the backend demo. So far it doesn't look to bad, it looks clean. I'm going to play around with it a bit - save, save and close, save and new - not too bad - it so far looks like it had some features I wish Wordpress would have. I'm liking it - It may be time for Joomla!

OK Nickoran, I need your help! I created a page, bla bla and saved it, but for some reason I cannot find it live...

How do you find the pages you make in a URL as in site.com/the-page-i-made ?

    I got.

In Joomla, to be able to see an article live on the website you need to apply it to a menu item.

Am I correct in the fact that templates for Joomla depend on the date and release of the Joomla?

Other words, when Joomla makes their next update is there a chance that your template could stop working?

    More so then with Wordpress?

That I doubt, I don't know why, but that would be horrible...

I'm getting around it, no worries.

Joomla does have templates that are for certain versions of the CMS but it also has a legacy mode which lets old versions of things work whilst they are being updated as there are usually tons of different plugins, just like wordpress.
More often than not you'll find you can update everything with relative ease.

Yes, that is what I thought. I knew we had run into a problem a year or so ago with a template that would not work because of the version of Joomla.
