    Duplicate content with 301 redirection

Recently I got a website for SEO, Some link building already performed for specific page and that page is already ranking for 1 important keyword according to its niche. But the site owner for some reason wants to rank new webpage for same keyword and like to remove the old ranking page.

Actually this site is using duplicate content for every page, so I recommended them to use fresh content. As old page with duplicate content is already ranking because of earlier link building so I'm thinking to (301 redirection) redirect this page to new web-page.

But I want to confirm, should I use new content for old ranking page and then use 301 redirection or there is no need to use new content just use 301 redirection.

If I understand you correctly, yes, use a 301 to redirect your old pages to the new ones. That would be a good idea.

The slightly better solution is to simply replace the old content with new on the same page. This avoids the need for a 301 entirely.

Thanks for suggestions, But I fear Google may penalize new page as old page has duplicate content. It wasn't caught earlier but as Google is introducing new Panda's every 2nd day so I don't want to take risk.

So again, Should I redirect (301 redirection) old page with duplicate content?

If you delete teh old content and replace it with new content on the same URL, how does it remain duplicate content?

Yes, changing the contents of the old pages is a good idea as the old urls are already indexed in Google and might also be spread on other sites like social bookmarking or related.

I'm sorry, I think I miss to clear everything from starting. The new page I'm talking about has a different url than old one, that's why I'm looking to redirect.

My question is.. If I redirect the old page with duplicate content on new page(new url) having fresh content, Is it fine?
Or should I first replace the duplicate content to fresh content and then try 301 redirection?

301 means Moved Permanently which means no user agent will ever see the old page, there is no possible way to request it that the server won't override per the redirection directives.

As for the old pages, if the redirect is contained in the page, then just swap in an empty page with appropriate message to visitors/user agents that the page is moved and they are being redirected. If you're using .htaccess or some other server redirect method, then the pages are only taking up space and can be removed. They are never served again once the redirect is in place on the server.
