Question Wouldn't a Software section somewhere benefit the community?

I'm most curious, that after all these years there's still no "Software" forum here at WPW. Why is that? I believe one would make sense in the Computer Assistance forum along with Hardware, Operating Systems, etc.

I would like to see a software forum. . Currently I am scared stiff of just about all software. Over the last ten years I have uploaded more useless software than I care to think about.

I am currently a non active member of dozens of forums dedicated to particular piece of software. One thing I have found is that forums dedicated to a particular software can be very protective. It is not difficult for a question to be 'disappeared' if a new member hits a sensitive spot.

Not all forums fully understand the meaning of the word "help" in the forum aims and purpose.

I like to think WPW does understand this word. Of course I doubt I could offer a great deal of help on a software forum. . . . But I might just accidentally become a little more informed.

I can't believe there is only one reply. At least it's in favor of one. I guess I should have added a poll here, maybe Rah or LD can do that.

I can be the one negative for you. But then it's in self interest since it will likely become an under used area that simple attracts spam as it begins to rank of all sorts of random software.

    I voted.

Maybe I am the last member left that came to WPW in the hope of learning something.

I just don't get you. For one, what does it hurt? Certainly not a thing--it can only help. And, how would it be any more conducive for spam than any other forum?? Obviously it would be called (for example) "Software: Post your questions about software here", and not "post your software for sale here".

It might prove useful in the computer assistance sub-forum. Post counting (and possibly signatures?) could be turned off and a stickie posted advising members to use the Reputation System when they get help, as well as Rate This Thread and other forum helpfulness signals.

I voted yes, given the points made by weegillis. Steve is right, I've moderated on several boards that offered a forum section for software and tools, and both are spam-magnets. Disabling signatures and live links in the posts would eliminate the majority of the attraction.
