Granted, opinion and open discussion is what forums are all about, but I hardly see this one as being the go-to forum to discuss any software that is not somehow related to search, search marketing, marketing, ecommerce, &c., down the list to developer tools, frameworks, &c. Spell out some specifics, @Clint1. A bearing on the real matter of WPW would make it a lot easier to go along with a post counting board, otherwise the Break Room is the only place for a wide open forum about 'software'.
Much as one would like to be able throw out any question about anything that arises, the wiser among us would expect an answer to only a few. I find that questions that are sincere and serious enough, and that stay on the topic of the forum, get the attention they deserve, and from senior members with something to add. These same people are not inclined to stray very far from the genre of post/thread they feel most at ease helping with or contributing to.
@Clint1, you and I both have seen the narrowing of the focus, the tightening of the aperture of this and other forums as more and more people turn to social networks, forgetting that forums were, as the grandchild of Bulletin Boards, the first social networks. (Read this in another thread recently, thought I'd 'borrow' it by way of agreement.) Forums are left to suffer, and have since become targets for link building enterprises; ergo, the extreme need to funnel everything into specific areas, and enforce the degree of specialization expected in those areas as well as enforce eligibility for member perks, such as signatures, PM access and exchange forums. When visitors arrive from the social networks, they ARE looking for specialized information, or at least serious discussion, else they wouldn't have strayed off the SN path to visit.
If there is a genuine interest in a software section for the forum I have no problems with adding it.
@Clint1, set up a thread in the break room and I'll have it added to today's newsletter to see if we can get any opinions on the matter. If it gets a lot of attention from people, we'll add the section. If it doesn't, we won't.
Does that sound fair enough for everyone?
I might help if I say that the thread in the break room should be about whether or not a software section would benefit the community.
