In conclusion, domain age is not a factor to rank a site.
    Before you say that :

2 other sites have Alexa Rank of 20,000 yet in Google search they are below the top site. These are more international directories so have more visitors from US for example and thus a lower rank.
The top site is UK based companies only - again it shows in Google.com,.fr.de etc. on the first page at least

The Alexa rank should only be used as a guide.

Well the old domain has advantages over the new one.The first one is it cannot be comes under Google sandbox. But domain age factor works in Bing more than any other SE.I completely agree with HTMLBasicTutor that after purchasing old domain the decreasing page rank to 0 for older domain is due to new owner only. The reason may be due to changes of URL or marketing strategies, any thing.

So many inaccuracies in this thread it is almost beyond belief.

#1. domain age has been discussed to death. It has never been proven to be a factor.
#2. simple changes in whois do not cause PageRank to zero out, that's just ignorant thinking.
#3. the only sandbox is one you create for yourself.
#4. buying a domain and having it change to a new owner also does not zero out pagerank.
#5. alexa is a crappy metric and extremely skewed and inaccurate.
#6. older domains do not automatically do better in search results. Many new sites rank well above stale old sites.

Someone else field any newer dumb things posed.

Assume that, the PR reset to 0, but backlink still exist.
Assume no such thing, as no such reset happens. Countable links either exist or they do not. The only discounting is for link manipulation, such as paid links.

Well, this thread certainly went to Hell in a hand-basket with amazing rapidity.

Hopefully those posting such drivel and tripe aren't charging others for their "expertise."

So if search engines show the result that users type upon, how does that show any corelation to domain age exactly?
