Google's moves raise questions about 'don't be evil' motto

Now Google observers, including many longtime admirers of the search giant, say the Mountain View company is behaving more like something it vowed never to become: a conventional company where the bottom line drives decisions

    Examples, only include:-

Last year, the U.S. Department of Justice required Google to forfeit $500 million for hosting ads from online Canadian pharmacies that led to the illegal importation of prescription drugs, and the Federal Trade Commission slapped the company with an order requiring 20 years of independent

Then, in February, Stanford University researcher Jonathan Mayer caught Google bypassing the privacy settings in Apple's Safari browser.

"According to Hoofnagle, Google should abandon the motto because:"

The evil talk is not only an albatross for Google, it obscures the substantial consumer benefits from Google’s advertising model. Because we have forgotten the original context of Google’s evil representations, the company should remind the public of the company’s contribution to a revolution in search advertising, and highlight some overlooked benefits of their model.

if they want to talk about dirty advertisment money - how about all the pyramid scammers that they let use their adwords and adsense advertising???

were talking billions! Not that hard to ban websites with the domain or keywords "cash gifting" or "HYIP" from their adwords/adsense advertising, not too mention the millions of other blatant and very straightforward to the point pyramid schemes - they KNOW these are scammers and illegal.

it's another grey area that google and others get away with.

I probably got plenty showin on some of my sites right now from their stupid scam advertisers

we should all just be pyramid scammers and advertise through google adwords - we will always be safe and protected

What does evil mean? How about the fraud at the heart of Google being a pay to play engine rather than a search engine? The fraud of representing your “search algorithm’s” “technology” being something other than a fraud. Google’s algorithm was always a front for the fraud. I’d call that evil.

I feel that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Google is becoming the sole and dominant player on the search arena. I feel that it can use its powers to help in its social corporate responsibilities and not use it to earn more and more money.

Tell me about it! We are supposed to feel sorry that, for instance, a Banks quarterly profits dropped to $328 million from $350 million and layoffs are eminent? Greed begets more greed.

Exclamation Ads seen on YouTube Offensive as run, or ruined by Google

Ads seen on YouTube Offensive as run, or ruined by Google

Quit recently I seen a Video Ad on YT overlayed ao the start of an irrelevant video.

The video started with a short PEGI18 notice and then too quite to stop into Gratuitous Violence on YouTube. YouTube going Too Far just to get some Money .
I posted the video to YT withs an extar pause to allow users to avoid watching the video which IMHO shows Gratuitous Violence

Anyone could see that advert, IMHO, and not have chance to stop it before it was too late to see the Gratuitous Violence

This must have bee Sold Google Sole to the Devil, The root of all evil is the love of money for AdWords :

As stated almost any type of Google Adwords, adverts acceped for money..

Are YT and Google going too far just for cash? Or is it they are going bankrupt and have to bend their own rules to make money?

Don’t Be Evil, but Don’t Miss the Train RE; New York Times

Most likely taken out of context by me here:-

The company has been accused of flouting copyrights, leveraging other people’s work for its benefit and violating European protections of personal privacy, among other things. “Don’t be evil” no longer has its old ring. And Google, an underdog turned overlord, is no humble giant. It tends to approach any controversy with an air that ranges somewhere between “trust us” and “what’s good for Google is good for the world.”

I think that with any company of that size it is going to be impossible to maintain the "don't be evil" 100% of the time especially when such large sums of $$ are involved. Anytime such large amounts of money are on the line there are people willing to step outside the normal boundaries to scoop up that money even if it is unethical. Thats just how the world is.

Though overall, I would say that google has done a good job in general with following the "do no evil" at least from what I've seen
