Thread: Risky location for Adsense text ads?

  1. #11
I agree with Webpro9. The fact that you are asking means you may already know the answer. Don't do it unless you are prepared to pay the price.

Once again it has been proven that the fingers can be faster than the brain - at least mine anyhow.

    Let me try this again...

Every quarter I poll my new web development students on "what bugs you about websites?" Clutter always comes up. Ads usually come up. But, most of them don't mind the ads as long as they don't contribute to clutter. It's all about the viewers.

I suppose in some ways it might resemble the site navigation located at the opposite side of the page, although I'm using a different color font (red), and the ads are clearly preceded by the Google name.

Anyone think this would throw up any red flags with Google Adsense?

Hi, everyone...I'm reviving this thread I started last month, mostly because I still see tons of websites that are doing exactly what I proposed earlier (Adsense links at top of page). Here's one example from Mashable:

    mashable-header.jpg

If this practice is so risky (as many have said) I guess I'm curious why big sites like Mashable are doing it. Maybe it's possible that Mashable is generating so much Adsense revenue that Google looks the other way? Or maybe the website is so widespread that it doesn't need Google search traffic anymore? It just doesn't strike me that a site as big as Mashable would do anything to risk their Adsense revenue, if it truly were a risk to begin with.

And for those who think that running Adsense means you don't care about your visitors...well, I don't think that's true. I think there's a happy medium somewhere.

In fact, I think placing Adsense at the top of the page is actually more helpful to visitors. If my site doesn't have what people are looking for, the links at top make it easy for them to go somewhere else.

So Google set the premises for your life and business?

Don't assume anything predictable from that company.

The only predictable thing from Google is that they are unprdictable.

Agree. The fact that you are asking means you already know the answer. Do it the right way and you will benefit in the long run.

In our ongoing effort to help you find more high-quality websites in search results, today we’re launching an algorithmic change that looks at the layout of a webpage and the amount of content you see on the page once you click on a result.
Rather than scrolling down the page past a slew of ads, users want to see content right away.
Same source as posted above and from my opinion keyon, the example you gave above is just fine. It doesn't seem like your users will have to scroll past a slew of ads.

With respect to the placement, it looks like it could be risky but with the Ads by Google, nice and loudly declaring it's presence you just might be alright.

And Google unprofessional if (in the way it is done) they close the service with one of their partners.
