    Google Adsense

I have been using adsense on my site for sometime. I ran into an iteresting issue as I have maxed out the number of URL's that I can block through the Allow and Block ads filter.

Has anyone else ran into this issue and is there a way around it?

I have gone through the sites that I have blocked and there is nothing that I would really remove as there are so many sites that get promoted on my website that I would consider irrelevent. Is there a better way to block these sites from showing up?

    Thanks for any insight.

The AdSense ads that are displayed on your site are driven by the keywords found in your content. This is on a page by page selection that picks the relevant ads.

AdSense charges the person for the displays through AdWords or it will show one of its own generic Google ads.

Try adding more of your site’s relevant keywords or key phrases into your content on a page by page basis. If your sites subject is a very narrow one, you will be limited in the ads that are returned.

I’m sure Google gets to the point of having to display something even if it does not match your sites market niche. Remember; you’re not paying for the ads, you are getting paid for the free usage.

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for the reply. I know how it is supposed to work in theory. My site is on youth sports and I get many relevant ads placed on my site but I also get a ton of stuff that is just junk. Job Search Sites, Education Sites, etc.

To me it just seems like free advertising as no one who is on my site is looking for that kind of information so I am not going to get paid for those ad placements because no one going to click on them.

Those are the types of ads that I have blocked from my site and there are over 500 of them.

That's why I stopped using adsense.. The ads suck for the most part.. Why not see if you can sell the ad space directly yourself? You get to keep all the money and only run the ads that you want..

I have no idea how to pursue that.

I have a two direct advertisers that I have had for the last 5 years and do well with them and I will have 4 or 5 throughout the year who may pay me for 6 months or so before they leave, but they have all been through them contacting me directly not by my actively searching for advertisers.

How would you go about actively pursuing advertisers for your particular nitche?

You might be interested in looking through ad networks. I'm not certain about finding particular niche advertisers, but you can chose and control which ads display through your site using these ad networks. Such as buysellads.com, clickbank.com, adbrite, com etc

You may be able to find some relative advertisers there that fit your site and again, you get to choose which display. Check out the sites I've listed if you're interested. I've not personally tried them, but I've had several friends do well with them

Instead of blocking the website advertiser, block the category. Blocking the category is a whole lot easier and it prevents ads from different sites in the same category from being displayed in the future.

With the interest-based advertising, Google has changed the policy for what ads to show up on publishers websites. If in a publisher account interest-based advertising is enable, then ads will be served based on publisher site visitors' browsing history and cookies. Google uses cookies to to know about the browsing history, interest and demographic categories of the users' and serve the ads based on his/her interest.

My suggestion is to disable interest-based advertising in your Adsense account. This will allow Google to serve more relevant ads based on your content, not based on users' browsing history and the interest and demographic categories associated with them. This may limit the number of advertisers for competing to publish ads on your site, but you will get relevant ads to youth sports.

You can find this setting through following path in your Adsense Account:
Allow & block ads >> Advanced settings >>

Research more about Interest Based Advertising and how Google Serve these ads at the following links:

Why bother trying to block ads at all?

Google selects ads for your site based on relevant keywords and how much the advertiser is willing to pay for a click. If certain ads or types of ad don't get clicked on much, I'm sure that Google refines the choice for your particular site. You trying to game the system by intervening is most likely to result in lower revenues for you. In addition, you are spending your valuable time doing work that that is unlikely to pay you anything.

(And YES, I do know that Google sometimes kicks people off Adsense for no easily determined reason)
