“History shows that popular technology is often supplanted by entirely new models.”
Well, that something is finally here. Her name is Siri.Siri is a virtual personal assistant incorporated as a feature of Apple iPhones beginning with the 4S generation. At least not because of that.Google’s Glory Days Are Numbered
My impression is that Google is too important for the web evolution and involved in many new projects and technologies.
In some cases, Google drives the from of web technologies forward:
Google is big enough to throw a lot of technologies on the wall. Some of them fall off, others will stay.
It is too early to know the future.

Well, you guys bet on what you think. All I know is that today and tomorrow my online gift basket business, lives by google searches alone. 70% of my business comes from three magic words on Google, gift baskets Ottawa! I know because my staff asks each and every person who orders, 'how they heard about us'. It always amazes me that most businesses don't ask this invaluable question and yet they throw lots of money into the 'foggy pot' of advertising without knowing what works! So you can start gearing away from Google if you want. I will wait until it really matters before I take heed of that statement.
I think Google will survive, but what they really need to focus on is to not let advertisers completly ruin the search experience.
We chose to purchase Google's Adwords and focus on site quality and customer satisfaction instead. It was the best business decision we made and one we have no plans on reversing. Our profits are near double last years and they tell me there is a recession going on... Go figure.
I for one greatly appreciate Adwords and will say a prayer that it is here for a long time.
Of course Google's glory days are numbered : they only control about 70% of the entire search market, own YouTube and therefore have a monopoly on the entire online video sharing market, have Google maps which is used by almost everyone, have recently launched Google+ which may rival FaceBook (and has the potential to destroy FaceBook if anything) and become the only internet king.
Oh yeah and they own Android and are looking at expanding in that market as well. Enough so that they scared Apple and Microsoft into actually coming together to keep Google out of their own industry by buying out certain patents. And Google has billions of dollars of capital to invest in whatever they want.

I've never understood the people who proclaim Google's downfall. It is perhaps the most successful business in the history of the world and continues to expand.
