Does anyone have an idea if someone is using Alexage?

I have been reviewing a website with an Alexa ranking of 12K, which is great, however, the site, without making reference to names, does not have any keywords which they rank for good through my own research. I have to question the sites Alexa ranking and the credibility because if a site is getting that much traffic some of it would be delivered by search engines. My question to the experts, is there a way to determine if a site is using services such as Alexage to influence their Alexa ranking?

Some webmasters hold Alexa ranking in very high esteem and will do everything and anything within their power to increase this ranking.

Personally, I think an Alexa ranking only has value to people who believe in Alexa Rankings.

Alexa Traffic Rank tells you only how well a site is doing among users who have the Alexa Toolbar installed relative to other sites' performances among those same users.

The answer, in short to the OP's question is: Yes, many unscrupulous jacka**es do indeed inflate the alexa rating of sites they are trying to sell via several means, alexage being one of them. If they have no search traffic then the chances of their traffic count in alexa being accurate are likely unreal.

I think it depends on the type of website, if we take a site like Google or Facebook, one would assume that the overwhelming majority of users would be referrals or direct traffic. You don't search for google or facebook to get to google or facebook Another example might be a blog like lolcats which doesn't have anything in the way of highly searchable content but because the content is funny lots of people share and link to it.

If the site is a closed community which is very active then it's possible to have a high pagerank but low search traffic volume. One of my websites has an Alexa rank of about 10,000 and we get 45% of the traffic from search engines.

Interesting analogy but you are quite right.

Really? Then why did you just basically contradict it?
