Setting aside the fact that such manipulations would be exceeding easy to duplicate and document, it would then be logical to expect that Google would do likewise to all AdWords users. Since that is clearly not the case, why would they single out you?

Naa, that's not too excessive at all. It sounds as if you have every base covered, so all you need to do is keep at it, build your company rep and it should be ok from then on. I'm just not sure about whether or not you need to go on with adwords. That you need to decide. You came back a bit after stopping it, so you could do it again and improve on it. It's entirely up to you.

Maybe not all accounts, but randomly, accounts over s certain spend? Sorry I know I am painfully suspicious, but in the absence of other good answers I am at loss.

As are others; in which case we'd have heard the wailing and gnashing of teeth here long ago and many times over.

You already got your "good answer."

It was your AdWords listings that were driving your traffic all along, not the organic.

You have to know where the website is currently ranking and for what keywords as well as what keywords are driving traffic to the website.

Because a keyword could've dropped and then when you remove the traffic from Google along with the keyword dropping you feel a heavy hit. Then when you put the PPC back it comes back but not to the same level as it was before because you have lost some organic traffic.

Indeed some are very much so. However, that is not the issue here.

AdWords Quality Score (QS) click-through-rate (CTR) component excludes organic traffic; it uses only the CTR on the specific keyword/phrase whose QS is being evaluated.

What you're saying also makes good sense although I do doubt demand for such keywords would drop off suddenly.I will check in the next SEO report from the contractor what the keyword rankings are.

Not the demand but the ranking. We ranked #3 for "website designers" and got a good number of clicks however about a month ago it dropped and went to page 3. We noticed a drop in website traffic, ran some reports and found the problem.
