FreeLance Question - Site credits or Not?

Lately, I've been seeing a lot of sites that have the "Designed By" at the bottom or a site credit link.

Do you think this is something that should be included in your clients designs?

I personally feel that if your client pays you for your work that you shouldn't put your logo on their site. Perhaps in the meta tags, but not on the site itself.

What are your views on this?

I've seen this with a lot of WP templates that people use. Mostly its free templates site owners add to their sites. The designers ask that the link be left so that if visitors to the site see the link, they might go to the designer's site and either buy or download more templates. (IMO). Some designers maybe have it in their contracts that they add a link to their own site so that others can have them design sites for them. I guess it depends on you in the end. It could be a good way to drive traffic to your design site and grow your client base. but I don't think its a necessity.

Most web design comapnies leave their link at the bottom of delivered project. Many customers just do not notice that or do not care. If there is no issue on customer side than why should I not leave my author mark?

As long as the client does not care, and the designer installs said links in the footer, those links, when clicked, should open a "new instance" of the browser. This will ensure the client's site is still active in the original browser window. Anything else is either a oversight, newb-ish or selfish.

On a work for hire, your first obligation is to the client.

It's one thing to seek and gain their permission for content promoting of yourself. It's quite another to take a lack of objection as being tacit approval.

Ask. If they agree, fine; otherwise, no.

We include this in most sites we create in our firm. We even have it in our agreements with the customers. So as long as you have an agreement with the client and they have agreed with having a link back to you I can't see why not?

Which is it Sid? Never or sometimes? I woudl assume we all give the best service at the best price we can offer, which may not be the lowest price.

I always ask my client if it is ok to link to my site. Not one client said no.

I've included a design credit in almost every site I've done, with the exception being a site I did for another designer who didn't want people to know that he didn't design his own site (and he paid more for that privacy). It's included in my contract, which I go over with clients step by step, so that everything is understood and discussed. A valuable part of any successful freelance business is being able to showcase work that you've done. If you do work that you cannot take credit for, which helps you continue to make a living, it's reasonable to expect that you will be compensated for it.

Work for hire agreements are different. In many of those types of agreements, you release any and all rights (including the right to claim that it's your work) to the work. Sure, if you're working for an agency or a company that provides you a steady paycheck and benefits, this kind of agreement is pretty reasonable. As a freelancer, however, when asked to do Work for Hire, I charge a hefty premium for not being able to say "I designed that and the client was very happy with it." It depends on your preference and the type of client you're working for. Most are happy to let you leave the credit there.
