You're getting nothing because you've no authority to view a directory/sub-directory itself.

Absent credentials for access via FTP, you're limited to requesting a single file at a time by exact name only.

That's an issue you'll need to take up with the site owner/operator.

No one is obligated to make it easy for you to copy all of their data.

Why? You talking download.cnet.com, or something?

Horsepuckey. Not only wrong, but flat out silly. It could even be automated via a spider.

No . . flapping your arms and flying to the moon is impossible.

It is merely a discouraging upgrade from 'easy as pie'.

I believe if you are using mozilla firefox there is an add-on called download them all I believe it will download all the links on one page however if they are not on one page you would have to still do one by one or contact the admin for a directory.

DownThemAll only grabs URLs that on present on the target page.

The OP is here speaking of gaining access to a sub-directory, not a page file. Access to directories and sub-directories is restricted to users with authorized credentials. Some sites provide for public access at such level via FTP with Anonymous log-in.
