For each new link gained by a page, the actual PR value of all other pages falls.

So, even in you keep all of your IBLs, but gain no new ones, your PR will fall continuously.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I was talking about the numbers in my Google Webmaster account.

Although I have not been building links to this site, my IBLs went up from 130.000 to 180.000 ( in my Google wm account )

A week ago it fell to 90.000 now it is at 100.000

At one point ( a few years back ) PR for this site was 5

More then a year ago I stopped getting links for this site, because I was not getting more visitors. It was almost as if Google had placed a filter that made sure I was getting about 100 visitors a day.

PR slowly went from 5-4-3 and now 2 . IBL's went up and up and now down.

All this time amount of visitors have remained the same

GWT IBL counts are, by intent, wholly unreliable.

The PR declined owing simply to the dearth of newly acquired IBLs.

I agree the IBL counts are unreliable, but the number of dropped IBLs, being so dramatic as it were, has me shaking my head. New IBLs are being acquired methodically as well, so the drop in PR is a little perplexing. I'm hoping it may be a hiccup and will sort itself out.

Consider how long it's been since the previous Toolbar update, and how many pages alone have been added to Google's indices since then.

It cannot be overly emphasized that PR is a measure of mutually exclusive events, such that the grand sum of all individual PR values must always = 1.

Not worried. I'd say, perplexed, more than anything.

As an update - after checking our GWMT this morning, 3/4 of the original backlinks have returned or are accounted for in GWMT. I would suspect the remaining links will also be accounted for in due time. However, the PR adjustments are sticking. Perhaps in time, that will change too.

Hi LD, I just saw the same thing as you did. A major part of my links reappeared in GWT, so indeed it was some change on they're end, and took some time to synchronize and gather the data from all Data Centers.
I suspect that Google filtered our backlinks, and removed those (1/4 on your account, for example) that they think are not relevant.

Since relevancy is immaterial to PageRank, that would have no effect on PR, unless they were deemed to be "paid" links, and thus discounted.

Even though link building is continual, they mostly come in trickles. If and when those other links return to GWT, I will update this thread. But as DS has mentioned, the PR changes were most likely affected from a recent algo update. I will have to put more effort into updating content and links, but hey, it's summer...

Hm-mm; quite the opposite. The PR calculation is wholly independent of the SERP algo. which is what was recently changed. What I did say re. the drop in PR was
The PR declined owing simply to the dearth of newly acquired IBLs.
