    My opinion is that if a search engine is not powerful enough to reach your site, it means it is very low quality. Even sites like AOL and Ask which have search engines have picked up my sites simply through pinging and low quality back link building.

    You can ping more than one page at once. Site maps only work if the SE visits your site map in the first place anyway - which means you will need to ping your site map too, which also helps.

    Still doesn't convey the meta data that an XML site map does.

    A number of SEs provide for your pushing a site map to them.

    Setting aside the fact that the phrase "powerful enough to reach your site" is vague, nebulous, the above does not serve to address your assertion that sites that do not support ping notification and respond quickly are of no value.

    In fact, given that Google frequently is most unresponsive, one might conclude, based on your stated position, that Google is useless.

    Huh? Just by submitting a site to the SE's, the traffic is going to start flowing in??

    The OP's question is, "is it worth it?", which requires an explanation in favor or not in favor. Not if it can be done.

    Submitting your site to the search engines is nice, but your site will get into index slowest. (roughly 2weeks as I remember).
    Create couple of good link back to your site and search engines will find you. (within few days max even sometimes within hours)

    Perhaps, but not all SE's will find and follow all backlinks. I'd suggest doing both, SE submission (if you feel so inclined) and building backlinks which can lead to a quicker indexing and increases one's link profile, which is a good thing.

    Relying on possible discovery via a 3rd party cannot be quicker than that which is guaranteed by way of direct submission.

    Its quicker than direct submission in 110% of the cases, atleast for Google. And direct submission is no guarantee when a search engine(Google) will index your site
    Rather than requesting search engines to visit your site, make them visit your site. It will faster and you possibly get more value for that.

    @LD

    Yes, I accept the all search engine (read the mom and pop search engines) may not find you, anyway their indexing technology is decades behind google.
    You need Google to find us, others will comply.

    Nope; not going to happen.

    Each and every crawler operates independent of the others. Having one discover a resource will not cause such discovery to cascade across the others.
