    Improve Google Pagerank

    Hi All,

Although I am seeing improvements in my sites organic positioning, I am not experiencing the same improvement in Google pagerank.

I am aware that a number of factors such as relevant inbound links and a sitemap are essential, however I am wondering if there is a primary contributor to increasing the PR?

    Thanks for your time
    Matt

I would first do yourself a favor--turn off the PageRank in the Google toolbar. It really doesn't mean much anymore. It doesn't have to do much with actual search engine rankings.

That said, the only way to increase your Google PageRank (if that's what you want to do) is to get links from sites that have a higher PR than your site.

    (my bolding)

Agreed about the green PR bar. But if used for a measure for this example, if my site is PR4, I wouldn't turn down links from PR4, 3 or even PR2 websites. Assuming you were not inferring to reciprocal linking, a one-way IBL is an IBL. Granted - lets assume the links are relevant and not from bad neighbourhoods. So having said that, why would you not consider backlinks from equal or lesser PR sites?

Hi Matt hows it going? wondered when I would see you on here. The fact that the google page rank is pretty useless is key to this but there is also the problem that Google updates the pagerank at random intervals like just whenever someone can be bothered and pushes a button. Sometimes it can take months to be updated.

So you might be doing all the right things gaining positions and PR constantly, but the PR won't show till the button is pushed and when it does the toolbar will probably be wrong or out of date anyway.

Not sure why that post came out twice but also Agree with LD you should get links from whereever you can as long as they are good. It all adds up and whose to say that relavent, human edited, unique, quality content PR3 link that you get now is not going to be PR6 in 6 months, and you don't need to do anything but sit back grin and hope it gets even better.

    Hi all,

Thanks for the responses. It is good to hear that PR is no longer a defining factor in organic positioning. Out of interest has anyone launched a new site and if so, do you recall how long it took before the website achieved PR1?

    Thanks
    Matt

The time that it took another new site to reach PR1 is not really going to reflect how long it will take your site to acheive PR1. There are so many things that can affect this and not least the randomness of updates and the inaccuracy of the toolbar rank. i would just keep at it and you will soon acheive some rank.

If your site is ranking and continuing to improve is that not the more important factor? or do you need the PR as leverage and sweetner for clients/partners etc...?

I suppose that was my concern. PR is a mechanism web managers are used to using to gauge the size and more importantly the authority of the website.

I will keep link building but it would great if our increase in organic positioning was reflected in our Pagerank. If other website attained a PR quickly then we must be doing something wrong!

Please don’t worry yourself sick over page ranks...It has got ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with ranking/ positioning...And since you are enjoying great organic positioning, why should you be worried about PR anyway?

Still, however, if the thought of not doing well on the PR is giving you sleepless nights, you need to understand what’s the real PR...Real PR is calculated to many decimal places in Google's private back end. It's not the kind of PR you see on the toolbar, which many people call TBPR. Your actual PR is changing daily, but you can't see those changes reflected on the toolbar...
