How complex can the algo for sorting this out actually be...
Last I checked, there was no algo for divining the unseen and unheard.

Look, whether you meant to say this or not, you hit the nail on the head (my bolding).

If there are value added aspects for your website visitors by setting up a few reciprocal links or just linking out, again for the sake of your website visitors, then fine. Otherwise if your attempt to manipulate page rank is the ultimate goal, this is a waste of time.
Last time I checked manipulating Google with links and PR has historically worked. It worked for JC Penny and it has worked for many others. You might call it "black hat" but that doesn't stop it from having technical value. The risk is just that you will be caught and removed manually.

Works right up to the moment that it's discovered and killed.

No disagreement there. But it is true of both white hat and black hat SEO that you're only focus shouldn't be just on the user experience. Unfortunate or not, a large percentage of what you do that no real human will ever does have effect on SEO.

Sorry; but, you lost me on the second sentence

In any case, the fact remains that the recent claim re. cyclical link structures with more than 2 members being cutting edge and difficult to detect is simply unfounded; it's very old and detected with ease.

In fact, any structure which has a regular pattern is inherently detectable.

The OP was talking about a linking strategy that is outdated and may work temporarily. If caught, you can get G-slapped. Is that worth the efforts of that tactic? The other reference I made was to reciprocal and outbound links - they can be value added efforts for visitors which don't have much affect on ranking. Recip may foster some relevant traffic, but that's about it. There are many other strategies that foster increased PR and positioning - these that I mentioned above, and especially that of the OP, are at the very least, questionable.

Ok. Given the fact that these points have been mentioned perhaps hundreds of times in dozens of threads, this list is meaningless to anyone unless you tell why you think these point are important.

I agree about guest blogging. Build a relationship with a quality blogger, than send them an e-mail and ask. Can be a great way to build traffic.

Since this thread is filling up with 'myth' and has lost any sense of authoritative discourse, it is now moved to the Castle Break Room to permit open and loose discussion.
