    It all depends upon the priorities If you wish to gain traffic from search engine use the flash very carefully, prefer a hybrid website... main contents in HTML and some presentational elements in flash.. but if you dont bother the search engines, you should go for a flash site, its a great way to add interactivity. Although you may also achive some animation through JS but with alot more difficulty then flash.

    Precisely how does Flash impact SE traffic?

    Flash does to add SE Traffic but added in hybrid style you are actually increasing the repeat customers by making them impressed with the interactivity. Not all the websites have sufficient amount of contents to impress visitors so its the design and animation to engage them.

    You can add small amount of alternate crawlable contents by using SWFObject method, this will be useful for small flash objects like headers or banners

    None of which is inherent to Flash.

    No matter how the content is presented, good is good and crappy is crappy.

    And, "crawlability" has no effect on visitor behavior.
