I couldn't agree more with rickvidallon and MrGamm. It would be a terrible Marketing mistake for both of them to try to attack each others business, specially using the same brands - in a typical brand extension move. This usually weakens the original meaning (positioning) of the brand and makes it vulnerable, and this might bring newcomers to the scene.

It certainly would be interesting to see what happens.

This is akin to McDonalds trying to tap into the coffee market and Starbucks trying to tap into the sandwich market. They both get a temporary spike in sales, then people forget get bored. The bigger Google and Facebook get, the smaller their collective branding brains become.

Let's face it. If I want a great coffee I go to Starbucks, If I want search I go to Google and if I want to socialize I go to Facebook.
I'm sure you can find better coffee than Starbucks.

Twice a week I have to waste an hour near the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew in London. I sit outside a cafe called the Kew Glasshouse, with a coffee and cigarette. 3 doors away is a Starbucks where the coffee is not so good and more expensive too, with less friendly staff and poorer decor. Starbucks always has more customers. Branding obviously works with the sheeple.

MAD is sane in this context. (Anybody not know what MAD stands for?)

I see it as normal announcement from Facebook. What they say sounds like: Buy from us don't go spending money on poor networks!
However what I don't get: how is Facebook better in search then Google. Facebook has quite a limited search option more related to finding people rather then information.

It's not about search, but about ad revenues.

If you display an AdSense ad on your Facebook page, and a visitor clicks on it, you and Google collect monies; but, FB gets nothing. FB wants a piece of the action, which they can obtain by requiring you to use a syndicator with whom they've established an affiliation; or, by becoming a syndicator themselves.

Or at the least the image they give off to me at least.

I don't really know much about it.

From a PR stance, maybe it is asking too much of people to stop using a profitable ad channel because they have personal issues regarding their competitors?

That being said, it will be interesting if they sue each other out of business.

Doubtful... I could Definitely see them being the kings of Social... I have a hard time believing that Google will be able to take the lead as a Social Network, and the same goes for Facebook becoming the King of Search.

People just don't care enough about either of them to make that shift inside their minds to accept a company doing a complete 180 overnight.

I mean if Walmart woke up one day and said they were going to be the largest banking institution in North America, people will still make the association as them being a Shopping Store.
You are very much right. I would say that both of them will co-exist.

Clearly, Facebook needs some better Public Relations advice...
