Problem with images on a website...

Ok, here's the problem... I'm taking over from an old webmaster that's not co-operative.
We control the domain name, but not the old server.

I can redirect the old pages to the new pages (by using the site: command to pull up a list of all pages in Google), but as I can't do this for the images stored by Google, and as I cant get on the server I can't move the images directly... There are lots of images that need to be moved from one server to the other, either that or deleted from Google's index.

Any help appreciated. I'm worried when the new website is launched all the missing old images will result in the website getting hammered on the rankings.

can't you just take the images from the live site or Google's cached pages?

Someone else may have a script but I don't know that you'll be able to effieciently download all the images. You may have to just do it manually...

I would go with this program that helps you copy an entire website. It worked for me, images and everything.

    Pulling images from a website....

I've had similar problems with uncooperative "former" webmasters so I've used this technique to secure images. Simply bring up the page in IE, then on the toolbar click on the Page, then Save As to save the entire page - images as all. Just tell it to save as the Webpage, complete. It will pull every image on that page into a file on your computer. If there are a lot of pages, the process may take some time - but it does the job.

If you want to save any scripts (java, css, etc.), I use HTML Kit - a free program that allows you to type in the URL of the scripts that are linked to a webpage.

    Hope this helps.

Just like you are redirecting your pages, why dont you redirect your images as well? Images must have live links, right? If its not working out, you may check this: http://www.squidoo.com/imagetransfer

Microsoft's Front Page can also download an entire site, images and all.

And as far as I know, Google doesn't store images ...

You can use a free program called HTTP track to capture the website - images and all. As long as the website is still up and hosted you can capture it all and put it back up on your own server. Then all you need to do is point your domain name servers to the new server where the files are stored. My company does this all the time with clients who want to move their websites away from a webmaster without them knowing. We capture the entire site and change the dns, the webmaster is not needed for any of this process unless they have the domain name under their control, which you said you do not. This forum is not letting me post the link to this program but it is at httrack dot com.
    Good luck!

I've used PageNest in the past and have gotten decent results. Used to be called something like Web Stripper.
