Saying "how do we increase our google rankings" is quite a 'blanket' question to try and answer, when we know literally next to nothing about your site. Give us some details like what your site is about, what is the current ranking, how long has it been "live", what you have been currently doing in terms of SEO for your site so far, etc, etc. This will help to generate some suggestions for you to consider.

Personally, I would advise any new member to read all the stickies in the SEO forum before posting a question. That's basic forum etiquette.

Well having an outstanding website is the best way to attract attention and reference. If people like it they will refer it and place links to it. Publishing news and other content is another way to get linked. Advertising and having featured in any targeted media websites also works good. It is also important to have a W3C compliant website.

In order to improve Google ranking, try to get as many quality backlinks as you can. Google loves the website with excellent off-page optimization but it doesn't mean you don't have to work on on-page optimization. I highly recommend to use video marketing, forum posting and article marketing to improve SERP.

Like people have been saying, the best way (basically the only way), is by having lots of back links. You want the back links to be from sites with a greater PageRank than you if you are looking to increase your rank. Personally when I start a new site I purchase about 10 backlinks on PR3-4 sites.
