Can you get penalized for being too aggressive with link building? If so, what is the best way to handle it?

Keep an eye on your link profile the entire time you are building links. Decide what is a good ratioto you and stick to it so the profile stays looking as clean as possible. It is not about getting links too fast that gets you in trouble, it is getting them too fast without any apparent means of doing so naturally. Your link campaign should be coupled with something that at least gives the appearance of a reason WHY you are getting links faster all of a sudden, such as a bunch of people retweeting you, or a press release being distributed, etc.

What are the causes then when you drop very quickly in the SERPS while building backlinks? Thanks.

Best to keep it as "natural" looking a link mixture possible - throw in some arb anchor text, a nofollow here and there.

It could be that your on page isn't up to scratch or your competitors are being more aggressive. I would guess that your recent drops in the serps actually has nothing to do with your link building campaign.

If the links are built naturally and it's happening fast then there is nothing much to worry about. Ex: something going viral. In this case google will realize that the links although being built fast are done naturally.
On the other side, lets say you start manually building too many backlinks at a quick pace, then this is something that could eventually get you penalized.

If you have a lot of sig links on a forum and change one of them you get a flood of new links from one source. How do you manage that? Thanks
