    Video Transcript Software

How do you create your video transcript? What software do you use? There are tons of choice out there and was wondering which one was the best (free or paying).

Please don't just list softwares, I'd like, if possible, insight on why YOU think it's a good one and what the pros and cons are.
If we can manage to make an exhaustive list of the best ones out there with the different features, I'm sure it could help more than one lost soul like mine.

    Cheers,

Our business offers video transcripts for clients, however we use a DVD (or VHS) player
and MS Word for the job. It's fast and efficient. Are you looking for software with voice
    recognition or analytic abilities perhaps?

I'm not really looking at anything specific but to gather a bunch of information to make a rational choice and help educate people about the different options out there.

You said you use VHS??? lol I actually have one in my house with a bunch of old tapes. I'm thinking of keeping it to sell it in a few years in a antique shop for a few hundred dollars. Old stuff always seem to come back.

Voice Recognition could be an interesting feature but how reliable is it?
    Analytics abilities is a plus.

I have used Inqscribe and found it workable. Tried a bunch of others and found them lacking far more at any rate.

Not very often but we did get one job on VHS last year. It's a pain to work with
after DVDs. I take it from WilliamC's post that the software you're looking for allows
for subtitling... we're purely doing paper transcripts of interviews (including all the
ums and ahhs) for video producers doing paper edits before they go into post. It
sounds like you're after something quite different.

I've heard that Dragon Naturally Speaking is pretty good with voice recognition. I'm looking into buying it, and testing it in different ways for content creation. Perhaps it would be a good solution for video, and audio transcription.

I'd love to hear if anyone has tried this.

** Got a partner or friend that just never stops talking? Make a blog, and hook them up to Dragon! Free content all day long . . . Just one of my ideas for this software.

    Let Google Do It

If you want easy transcription or even translation, post it on YouTube. I know the accuracy of the YT transcriptions is questionable....if not humorous. But here's how I look at it. My granddaughter is 2 and can put together simple 2 & 3 word sentences. YT probably has a whole floor of folks in cubicles working on this. How long can it be before this works really well? Already it's improved. And YT understands a lot more of the video content than you would imagine.

Whatever approach you decide to select, the quality of the audio is integral. Have the mic on the talent, add compression and maybe even EQ. The quality of the audio will be the determining factor in how any transcription software will work.

    Cheers
