What do you mean by your host having "lost [your] CGI edit screen manager?"

First, sort out the issues with your hosting in respect to CGI. How could they 'lose' your files. Most hosting companies keep daily backups of their server farms and could restore your entire site in a few moments if you asked them to.

Short of knowing the exact nature of your shopping cart script, can it be reasonably assumed that it comes with an auto-installer on the source (vendor) site? The AXS 2 Tracking System can be auto-installed from their site (this is only an example). A quick run through of this auto-installer will pin-point any server issues as it checks your server before going ahead. If it installs correctly (needs a couple of edits to ax-admin file, otherwise ready to use) then the safe bet is that most other CGI, &c., auto-installs are supported on the host server.

This is just a discovery approach, beyond which more replies will touch upon your exact objective. The AXS system can be left as is, without any harm, even if you don't use it. (I do use it, and love it.) Even though it's a bit out of date, its filtering features are so easy to use and put out useful reports that can focus right in on any piece of log data.

So just go ahead with the next step of seeking an auto-install of your shopping cart.

They lost it, they called and ask if i had removed it, i said no, i hadn't been on the site to change anything for months. They could not retreive it, all they had on file was an old copy from 2000, they did not have a current updated version saved, so they sent it up, it pulled the old version up, so i sent the curent version up, but when you went to check out it then pulled the old site in. Which was a major proble, because i do not offer some of those products, nd now have many many more, that they can see but can't buy.

So without the cgi edit manager, my site will not work. I am desperate, i have looked for a year, to fins someone who can help me, the university of wy. professor, has had it for a year, but he knows nothing about cgi, so there it is, i do not have anyone to fix it, we have changed hosts, but he has not sent the site back up yet, untill i get someone to help me. i do not have money to have the site rebuilt from scratch, i have major health issues, my husband was forced into retirement because of an injury, and i need the site to work, so can make extra money to live on.

I make everything i offer on my site, i am an artist and designer, it is a country victorian web site, that is why, without the cgi edit screen, i'm sunk! Is there anyone who can help me, please? Jil

By "CGI edit screen manager" do you refer to a 3rd party utility, an part of the shipping cart itself, or something else?

Like deepsand asked twice now, what is CGI? Is this a control panel for your website? Who is the host? You can get lot of free programs to download your website to your computer, work on it and upload it beck again. But stop panicking, that's a good start.

    Need more info

Yeah, I agree, we'd need more info. A link to the website might help some of the tech gods figure out what shopping cart you're using. There are literally hundreds of cgi control panels that it could be, so knowing which was installed will be a huge help in telling you how and what to upload from where.

For everyone else, this is a good moment to point out the value of regular backups. If you don't have a clue how to do that, your webmaster can send you a copy of your website. Your hosting company can also instruct in how to do this.

A link to the site might help us, was the site built in any content management system or have you any idea what it was built in? if you have all the current site backed up you could easily reinstall a management system or shopping cart and then overide the new files with the backup in a lot of cases.

Even though you've not yet enough posts for being allowed to include active links in the Body of your posts, you can still include URLs.

The easiest way is to break it up into pieces, such as "www dot DomainName dot TLD."

www.cubbyholecreationscom commercecgi.com was my shopping cart

my site was made in dreamweaver, it has a commerce cgi shopping cart, here is the link to the place the web designer got the cart, it was a free software downlaod I think they charge now to belong, and i do, but didn't know what i needed to get, in the members area. the professor has not put up the site, only pointed it to the new host. which is justhost.com, my site was cubbyholecreations.com, but just looked and he has not sent it up, i will ask him to try and send it up on monday. I used to be able to, but it just says it is an ftp error, i imagine it is because of the new host.
